Maidana vs Lopez preview

After a classic Super Middleweight fight this weekend in London, England boxing,  fans will be treated to more quality action next weekend at The Home Depot Center of Carson, CA. There may be no titles on the line, but the stakes couldn’t be higher for the fighters involved.

The main event features Marcos Maidana of Argentina in his third bout under the tutelage of Robert Garcia against Riversides Josesito Lopez. Lopez will be making his first appearance since last September’s punishing loss to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. At stake for the winner is potentially lucrative re-matches with Victor Ortiz (both own stoppage wins), or bouts against the likes of Amir Khan, Walter Mattheyse or World title fights. The loser? Maybe to the back of a long bus line given the conveyor belt of talent which resides in the junior welterweight and welterweight divisions. The style match-up figures to be interesting with Lopez being more of a classical boxer, but one that is willing to throw down when neccesary and Maidana being more of a slugger, but one who has added some boxing skills to his repertoire since hooking up with Robert Garcia. Overall a more than difficult match to call which figures to come down to who wants it the most.

In the co-feature Mexico’s hard hitting Alfredo Angulo faces off against elusive and often overlooked Cuban, Erislandy Lara. Angulo has been rebuilding since losing a classic slugfest to James Kirkland in 2011 and a period where he was locked up due to immigration matters. Lara has struggled to get most of the sports upper echelon in the ring with him and hasn’t quite been able to get his hand raised in the fights that matter most. Now is a chance for both fighters to posistion themselves to where they desire and that is in the title mix in the junior middleweight division. The styles could’t be any different; Angulo is a relentless slugger who comes forward and comes forward throwing only heavy punches until he gets his knockout or he gets knocked out. Lara couldn’t be any different. He relies on sharp relfexes and savvy ring moves to beffudle and outpoint his opponent and aim to win more rounds than his opponent. Usually in boxer vs. puncher matches you have to favor the boxer, but you never know what happens until the bell rings.
