Desert Showdown: Love vs. Medina Prelims Results Recap

Andrew Tabiti (6-0) vs. Eric Cason (2-1)

(Cruiserweight Bout, 6 Rounds)

Undefeated Tabiti stepped into the main bout of the preliminary card to take on Cason. All he needed though was less than half of the scheduled bout time to get his man out of there. Tabiti’s straight shots were explosive and his work inside as he shoe shined his opponent did massive damage in a very short amount of time for the first two rounds. Going into the 3rd round, Tabiti landed a picture perfect combination that sent his man to the canvas. The over hand shot cracked the temple of Cason who lifted himself off of the mat and propped up to one knee but could not beat the referee’s count.

Result: Andrew “The Beast” Tabiti remains unbeaten defeating Eric Cason via TKO at (2:18) of the 3rd round.

Luis Arias (8-0) vs. Angel Martinez (6-6-3)

(Middleweight Bout, 8 Rounds)

Two 160ers in Arias and Martinez collided for the only middleweight battle of the card. It was however, all Arias as the undefeated fighter showcased ring general ship, stellar footwork and superior boxing behind a pair of quick hands & fast combinations. Martinez to his credit did his best to keep up with his more skilled opponent but other than some small success inside the clinch, he was out worked and out hustled for the better part of 8 rounds. Arias worked the angles and set up shot after shot leaving no doubt in the judges’ eyes who the clear cut winner would be. A clash of heads due to an accidental head butt momentarily brought things to a halt during the 7th round. But, Arias carried on with his masterful performance as he slipped punches on the inside and used his legs to get out of any trouble while simultaneously blood dripped down into his right eye leaving him to sport a crimson mask for all of the final round.

Result: Luis “Cuba” Arias remains unbeaten defeating Angel Martinez by unanimous decision. Scores of (78-74) and (80-72) twice.

Ashley Theophane (35-6-1) vs. Daniel Calzada (10-10-2)

(Light Welterweight Bout, 8 Rounds)

A pair of 140-pound combatants in Theophane and Calzada met in the middle of the ring and traded heavy leather for the entire duration of their bout. Rarely was their a clinch or did referee Russell Mora need to get in-between the two fighters while they constantly stood in front of one another and traded jabs as well as right and left hooks. The power advantage nonetheless, went to the British fighter as Theophane’s shots snapped his man’s head or made him step back a few paces from the impact. Calzada fearlessly stayed in the pocket looking to land something big but his British foe displayed alertness and slipped some big shots using solid upper body movement then countering up top as the rounds went on until the final bell sounded.

Result: Ashley “The Treasure” Theophane defeats Daniel Calzada by unanimous decision. Scores of (80-72) twice and (79-73)

Lanell Bellows (8-1-1) vs. Codale Ford (4-3)

(Super Middleweight Bout, 4 Rounds)

The third match of the evening saw Bellows and Ford lock horns in a 168 lbs affair. The match was all Bellows as he walked his man down with a variety of offensive attacks from over hand rights, stiff jabs, multiple body shots, and uppercuts on the inside. From the 1st round, Bellows began using his straight left hand as a range finder before ripping to Ford’s body as he covered up along the ropes. Ford wasn’t allowed to unload much return fire as the rounds trickled down since Bellows mixed up the body attack by blending in some shots upstairs and his over hand right was money with Ford having no answer for it. The Kansas City representative continued the assault as the minutes progressed, cruising to a decision victory.

Result: Lanell Bellows defeats Codale Ford by unanimous decision. Scores of (60-54) handed in by all judges.

Ladarius Miller (3-0) vs. Eddie Diaz (0-1)

(Welterweight Bout, 4 Rounds)

The second bout of the night featured another pair of 147-pound warriors in Miller and Diaz. The bout started off weaving its way in and out of each corner of the ring but before long it morphed into a phone booth-style match-up. As of round 2 Diaz was smothering his foe with seemingly never ending pressure as Miller slipped and dodged the punches in close quarters, looking to land a counter. Diaz was relentless as he moved forward applying constant pressure to his man that resembled a young Antonio Margarito, the only problem was, Diaz didn’t have the Margarito-like power when he landed. The punches that got the attention of the crowd and also Diaz were Miller’s as he landed hooks as well as looping shots in close range all throughout the fight.

Result: Ladarius Miller remains unbeaten defeating Eddie Diaz via unanimous decision. Scores of 40-36 x 2 and 39-37

Cortez Bey (9-1-1) vs. Jacinto Quintana (2-3)

(Welterweight Bout, 6 Rounds)

Beuy and Quintana kicked off the night for the Mayweather Promotions card entitled “Desert Showdown” from the Pearl inside the Palms Casino Resort. Quintana did allot better than expected as he took Bey the distance in a match that could have gone either way. In the end, the judges gave the nod to the more active fighter with the cleaner landed punches.

Result: Cortez Bey defeats Jacinto Quintana via split decision.
