Canelo vs. Khan Prelims Results Recap

canelo vs khan poster-may 7-2016Diego De La Hoya (15-0) vs. Rocco Santomauro (13-1)
(Super Bantamweight Bout – 3 Rounds)
Diego and Rocco went at it in close quarters right out of the gate, exchanging hard and heavy shots in the pocket. Rocco stood and traded but the more powerful shots were landed by Diego as the first few minutes progressed. Late into Round 2 with about 20 seconds left, Diego landed a picture perfect right hand counter that sent his foe to the canvas. Rocco beat the count but from then on it was visible that he wasn’t as eager to engage. In Round 3 during an exchange Rocco caught his man coming in but Diego returned fire with a crisp left hook on the inside that stopped his foe dead in his tracks. Diego’s best body of work was seen in Round 4 when he lit up his opponent with the left hook, if he wasn’t leading with it he was countering with it, now almost landing at will. Rocco’s right eye was beginning to swell shut and looked a bloody, battered mess. De La Hoya did not let up the assault however, landing clean and accurate shots to his man’s head and body. All Rocco could do was block or slip as best he could before throwing some shots of his own but they were little to non-existent as the rounds progressed.
In Round 7 the two men came together and Diego resorted to pushing Rocco’s head down with his glove. Something referee Jay Nayde did not care for and called time out for in order to deduct 1 point from Diego. De La Hoya then rallied with an onslauhght of clean shot after clean shot. He did his best Roy Jones Jr impression and feinted with the right hand, circling with it and taunting his man then landed a rocket of a right uppercut that snapped his foe’s head back. The vibrantly charasmatic punch forced the referee to waive the fight off and prevent any more unecessary punishment to the overmatched Duarte native.
This victory is satisfying to me because it shows all the hard work I’ve put into my training camp” Diego
RESULT: Diego De La Hoya remains unbeaten defeating  Rocco Santomauro via TKO at (1:59) of Round 7.
Jason Quigley (11-0) vs. James De La Rosa (23-4)
(Middleweight Bout – 3 Rounds)
Probably his toughest test to date and also his best performance since he showed tonight that he can dig down deep as Quigley was taken the distance by the seasoned De La Rosa. ‎The Texan taunted and baited his man in and along the ropes landing some good right hooks to the side of the head and face of his man, but Quigley would not be denied as he marched forward behind his jab and left hook. Pressure was also on the Irish man’s side as he doubled his foe’s output coming forward with shot after shot thanks to some food conditioning.
In the final rounds of the match Quigley visibly hurt his man. The Texas native got careless coming out of the pocket and got caught with looping shots along the ropes specially in the 9th Round where he pretended to be hurt but the acting was very convincing as he shook his head and body. Quigley continued pressing on and almost had the finish in the last few minutes, where a hurt De La Rosa weathered the storm the “El Animal” Quigley’s right hands, hooks and overhand punches before the bout came to a close.
RESULT: Jason Quigley remains undefeated ‎beating James De La Rosa by Unanimous Decision. Scores of 100-90, 100-90 and 100-90.
Lamont Roach Jr (11-0) vs. Jose Arturo Esquivel (9-5)
(Lightweight Bout – 8 Rounds)
Roach Jr made ‎it more of a sparring session than a tough fight as he kept Esquivel on the outside of his punches and glided along ring thanks to good footwork. His jab was also showcased as he popped along the center of the ring not giving Esquivel much of any openings or a chance to be in the bout. If he wasn’t getting caught with it a Roach left hook made him take notice and cover up putting him in a box as the rounds progressed until the final one.
RESULT: Lamont Roach Jr remains undefeated beating Jose Arturo Esquivel via Unanimous Decision. Scores of 79-72, 79-72 and 79-72.
Rashidi Ellis (15-0) vs. Marco Antonio Lopez (24-9)
(Super Lightweight Bout – ‎8 Rounds)
Ellis and Lopez went to work for the entirety of the scheduled match. Lopez gave as good as he got but it was never enough as Ellis ‎beat him to the punch and used good footwork and movement to keep his man just outside of his punches. When he boxed on the inside he landed the better body shots and when Ellis opted to stay in range his jab and overhand shots were the deciding factors in helping the judges know who the clear winner was.
” I was a little rusty going in because I haven’t fought in a year and a half ” said Ellis regarding his performance, as usual his own worst critic.
RESULT: Rashidi Ellis remains undefeated beating Marco Antonio Lopez by Unanimous Decision. Scores of 80-72, 80-72 and 80-72.
David Mijares (1-0) vs. Omar Reyes (1-3)
(Super Lightweight Bout – 4 Rounds)
All Mijares and all the time was the tag line for the very first boxing bout in the history of the T-Mobile Arena tonight as he and Reyes kicked off the night. Mijares was first, landed the better punches and made relatively easy work of his debut as he tangled with Reyes for 12 minutes. Once the cards were read it was clear he took all the rounds on the score cards.
RESULT: David Mijares makes a successful debut defeating Omar Reyes via Unanimous Decision. Scores of 40-36, 40-36 and 40-36
