St. Pierre Unifies Titles With Unanimous Decision Conquest Of Condit in Canada

The sold-out crowd at the Bell Centre in Canada went home happy tonight as native son and welterweight king, Georges “Rush” St. Pierre returned to reclaim his throne following a vintage performance win over Interim Champion, Carlos “The Natural Born Killer” Condit for the UFC 154 main event in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The 19-month layoff seemed irrelevant right out of the gate as Georges cut of the cage and pressured his foe behind constant leg kicks and right hands disarming Condit of any offense in the 1st round. Georges got the shot in as well, taking the fight to the mat, working his ground and pound immediately opening up a cut on Carlos’ forehead. The ex-WEC Champion weathered the storm but was a bloody mess walking back to his corner. More of the same in the 2nd stanza from St. Pierre then with about 2 minutes left, a Condit kick was caught by Georges enabling him to easily score another takedown.

The momentum drastically changed halfway into the 3rd round when a 2-punch-kick combination by Condit floored the Canadian icon. The punches missed their mark but a left high leg kick caught Georges on the top of the head toppling the Tristar Gym Representative. Condit swarmed his downed opponent with some serious ground and pound but wasn’t able to put his man away. “Rush” managed to get the fight back to the feet, again backing Condit up before throwing a 2-punch combination making Carlos’ raise his guard allowing for a perfectly timed St. Pierre takedown. The New Mexico native worked out of his guard, relentlessly getting back to his feet but didn’t land anything else of significance. The fight went into the championship rounds and with roughly 30 seconds in the 4th, St. Pierre got his foe to the mat with yet another takedown, keeping him there for the majority of the round. With a minute left Carlos reversed the position but Georges easily countered getting top position once again to close out the round.

The hometown fighter opened the final round with another takedown thus going 6 for 6 in attempts during the 170-pound title unification tilt. More St. Pierre ground and pound ensued before Condit brought the match back to its feet however Georges secured the 7th takedown with roughly 2 minutes left. He maintained top position for the rest of the round but in the last 10 seconds punched away viciously at Condit before the final bell sounded on his way to another successful belt unification making Georges undoubtedly the greatest 170-pound warrior to ever step foot inside the Octagon. The judges scorecard’s read (50-45) twice and (49-46) granting Georges St. Pierre the unanimous decision victory elevating his record to (23-2). The loss drops Carlos Condit to (28-6) leaving him to regroup for possibly another run in 2013. As for the newly minted and unified 170-pound UFC Welterweight Champion, “Rush” St. Pierre is now 10-0 in fights that have gone the distance, holds the 2nd longest UFC win streak with 10 in a row and is now tied with Matt Hughes for his record of 7 UFC title defenses.

Hendricks Blasts Kampmann In 1 Round

For the UFC 154 co-main event top welterweights Johny Hendricks and Martin Kampmann squared off in the Octagon. However, it took longer for both men to walk out to the cage because Hendricks connected on the chin of Kampmann with a straight left hand that sent him crashing backwards unto the mat just shy of the 1st minute of the 1st round. Kampmann was out after the shot landed but his head bouncing off of the canvas surely didn’t help matters. The official time was (0:46) of the 1st round granting Johnny Hendricks the win and the “Knock Out of The Night” bonus.

Carmont Squeaks By With Split Verdict Over Lawler

Francis Carmont and Tom Lawler fought to a split decision in their middleweight bout. Carmont pressed forward with this takedown attempts and combinations but Lawler had his moments by stuffing some of his opponents shots and twice locking in solid guillotine submission attempts from his guard. Nonetheless, after the dust settled two judges saw it (29-28) for the Canadian 185-pound upstart  while the other judge turned in the same score card but for Tom Lawlor.

Dos Anjos Decisions Bocek

Rafael Dos Anjos snapped kicks, threw hard shots and stuffed the bulk of takedowns coming his way from his adversary, Mark Bocek in their lightweight fight. Dos Anjos’ better hands and technique thwarted any progress by Bocek who found no answer to the Brazilian’s riddle. After 3 rounds all judges saw the bout (30-27) giving Rafael Dos Anjos the unanimous decision triumph.

Garza Upsets Hominick In Hostile Soil

Opening the UFC 154 PPV card was a featherweight battle between Pablo Garza and one-time title contender, Mark Hominick. The Canadian threw everything but the kitchen sink at Garza as the two went to war in the 1st round. A hard body shot from Hominick hurt Garza badly but to his credit he weathered the onslaught of ground and pound that followed and took the fight right back to his foe once they got back to the feet. The next two rounds were easily Garza’s as he got the better of the stand up, battering Hominick’s face and took the fight to the ground with ease looking for various submissions on the 3 to 1 favorite. Once the judges read their cards, scores of (29-27), (30-26), and (29-28) granted Pablo Garza the unanimous decision win in his opponent’ hometown.
