REAL COMBAT MEDIA WEEKLY BOXING REPORT

REAL COMBAT MEDIA 2017 – “BOXER OF THE YEAR”

By Victor O. Garcia – Real Combat Media Head Video Reporter

Welcome to the 6th annual Real Combat Media 2017 Boxing awards. Today we give out the Real Combat Media Boxer of the Year award. There were many great boxers in 2017, however, these 4 stood out the most to our boxing team.

4. Anthony Joshua –

Undefeated Anthony Joshua, 28, (20-0, 20 KOs) had a strong 2017 where he became the first fighter in over 12 years to stop Wladimir Klitschko on April 29thin the Real Combat Media 2017 Fight of the year in front of a record 90, 000 fans at Wembley Stadium in London. Joshua showed adversity in this fight where he came off the canvas to defeat Klitschko and stop him in round 11. Klitschko then retired a few months later after negotiations for a rematch failed. Then on October 28th in Cardiff, Wales, Joshua faced a very tough Carlos Takam and stopped him in the 10th round. In 2018, Joshua will most likely face Australian WBO champ Joseph Parker next. If he defeats Parker, he will face either Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder or Luis Ortiz to decide who is the best heavyweight in the world.

3. Errol Spence –

Undefeated Errol Spence, 27, (22-0, 19 KOs) only fought once in 2017 since many of the top welterweights refuse to fight him. Spence went on the road and challenged Kell Brook for his IBF title on May 27th in Sheffield, UK. Brook, who never lost a fight to a welterweight, was stopped when he decided he could not continue after Spence landed many power shots and body punches to break down Brook in front of his home crowd of 28, 000 people. This fight established Errol Spence as a boxing superstar in the Welterweight division. In 2018, Spence will face Lamont Peterson on January 20th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. If Spence defeats Peterson, look for him to demand a fight with Keith Thurman who is also an undefeated world champion welterweight. At this time, Thurman refuses to fight Spence and said he is willing to wait til 2019 to make a super fight for Welterweight supremacy. Terence Crawford, who is promoted by Top Rank is also a future option for Spence.

2. Vasyl Lomachenko-

Vasyl Lomachenko, 29, (10-1, 8 KOs ) has earned the new nickname “Nomaschencko” for making two undefeated fighters quit on their stool. Lomachenko has excellent footwork and broken rhythm that frustrates all of his opponents where they have a very difficult time to land any significant punches on the former Ukrainian Gold Medalist. In 2017 Lomachenko picked up 3 corner stoppages where his opponents either decided to not continue or could not continue. Vasyl defeated Jason Sosa in April, Miguel Marriaga in August and made a top pound for pound fighter Guillermo Rigondeaux quit for the first time in his career a few weeks ago on HBO at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY. In 2018, look for a possible fight with Miguel Berchelt, a rematch with Orlando Salido or even move up to 135lbs and face Mikey Garcia in a super fight.

1. Terence Crawford – Winner

For the second year in a row, Terence Crawford, 30, (32-0, 23 KOs) takes home the Real Combat Media Boxer of the year award. Terence who is trained by Brian Bomac McIntyre in Nebraska, dominated two world class opponents. Terence finished the Gold Medalist, Felix Diaz in May for the first time in his career and then became the unified champion when he knocked out the dangerous power puncher Julius Indongo in August. Terence has decided to move up to 147lbs to test his skills in boxing’s toughest division. Undefeated Australian Jeff Horn, the current WBO champ is likely to be Crawford’s first opponent in the new division since they are both promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank.
