Puerto Rico’s undefeated prospect Carlos Velasquez returns Sept 7 against Rico Ramos

carlos_velasquezAugust 28, 2013 – Puerto Rico’s undefeated Olympian, Carlos Ivan Velásquez (15-0, 11 KOs), takes a major step up in competition when he challenges former world champion, Rico Ramos (21-3, 11 KOs).  The 10-round featherweight bout will take place at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, September 7 on the undercard of Chris Arreolavs. Seth Mitchell, a show promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and televised on Showtime. Velásquez vs. Ramos will be a non-televised bout with the possibility of highlights shown.

Velásquez who represented Puerto Rico in the 2004 Olympics, was an outstanding amateur boxer winning numerous amateur championships.  Being the last man to defeat Yuriokis Gamboa, Velásquez feels he has the skills to become a world champion sometime in 2014.

“I’m ready for the next chapter of my career,” said Velásquez. “Rico Ramos is a world class fighter and I’m looking to put on a great show for the fans.”

A win against Rico Ramos will surely give Velásquez the recognition he is seeking.   Velásquez is coming of an impressive unanimous decision victory against Giorgi Mtchedlishvili this past May. Carlos dropped Mtchedlishvili in the final round of that bout.

“I feel with a few more fights, I’ll be ready to challenge all top contenders in the featherweight division and fight for a world title by next year.  First, I have to get past Ramos and show the boxing world that I’m a worthy contender.  My main focus is beating Rico Ramos. I want to become my islands next great champion and this will move me into that direction”
