Mayweather vs. Canelo: Under Card Results Recap

Luis ARIAS (6-0) vs. James WINCHESTER (16-8)

(6 Round Super Middleweight Bout)

A famous boxing commentator once said, “you can’t win a fight going backwards”, and that was absolutely true tonight regarding Winchester’s performance.  He backed up way too much or let Arias walk him down from bell to bell until the fight ended. If Arias wasn’t putting together great 3-punch or 4-punch combinations, he backed his man into a corner or along the ropes and threw an overhand right before ripping away to his foe’s body with left hooks downstairs.  Some of those Arias punches only further took the wind out of his opponent, making the come- forward approach that much easier. Rinse and repeat for 6 rounds as Arias remained composed and put together a fine performance on his way to a points verdict.

Result: Luis Arias remains unbeaten by defeating James Winchester via unanimous decision. All three judges score it (60-54).

Ronald GAVRIL (6-0) vs. Shujaa EL AMIN (12-4)

(8 Round Super Middleweight Bout)

Gavril and El Amin met in the center of the ring and traded punches for the 1st round and seemed about even in connect percentage.  However, Gavril started to find success by mixing up his attacks as he added body shots to his arsenal. This paid dividends early as he hurt his foe about midway into the 2nd round with a body shot, making El Amin retreat for the remainder of the round. In the 3rd stanza Gavril got the better of the exchanges when he stunned his man with a counter uppercut on the inside as El Amin was coming in to deliver an punch. From that round on Gavril found his answer to the El Amin puzzle, body shots via hooks mixed with doubling up on his punches. El Amin wouldn’t just sit back and take all of the shots though, he fired back but his offense missed its mark or the punches were getting wider and wider as the fight progressed letting Gavril slip the damage with some good upper body movement. Gavril found his timing by the second half of the fight, be it using back to back left hooks or right uppercuts on the inside, the unbeaten fighter was able to cruise round after round until the bout ended to maintain his “0” intact.

Result: Ronald Gavril remains unbeaten by defeating Shujaa El Amin via unanimous decision.  All three judges see it (79-73).

Chris PEARSON (11-0) vs. Joshua WILLIAMS (9-5)

(8 Round Middleweight Bout)

Pearson boxed beautifully behind his jabs, crosses and hooks that couldn’t miss from the second the 1st round started. His stiff jab snapped Williams’ head back constantly landing each and every time with more and more accuracy. Alert to the speed disadvantage on Williams, Pearson began opening up with some crisp combinations. With everything landing and Williams not having an answer, referee Russell Mora instinctively called a halt to the bout.

Result: Chris Pearson remains unbeaten by defeating Joshua Williams via TKO at (1:14) of the 1st round.

Lanell BELLOWS (5-0-1) vs. Jordan MOORE (3-0)

(4 Round Super Middleweight Bout)

In the opening bout from the MGM Grand for “The One” event from Las Vegas, undefeated fighters Bellows and Moore kicked things off in the heavyweight division. Bellows’ approach was methodical as soon as the first bell sounded as he used his jab to set up big shots on his man and pressure him. He walked Moore down shot after shot until he landed a perfect combination that sent his foe crashing to the canvas in the latter part of the round. The last shot from the combo caught Moore on the head and he was badly dazed, unable to beat the referee’s count prompting the official to call a stop to the match.
Result: Lanell Bellows remains unbeaten by defeating Jordan Moore via KO at (2:30) of the 1st round.
