Evans on Jones: “Ring rust is real. He never opened up tonight.”

Los Angeles – The following quotes and videos are from tonight’s FS1 UFC 197 POSTFIGHT SHOW on FS1 hosted by Jon Anik, with Rashad Evans and Tyron Woodley providing analysis. Megan Olivi conducted interviews.

FOX UFC analyst Rashad Evans on Jon Jones’ victory over Ovince Saint Preux: “Ring rust is real. It’s all due with the timing and the doubts. Jon Jones had the doubts. He never opened up tonight. OSP grew up miles tonight. What he experienced tonight was better than anything he could learn in the gym. I thought he looked great. And he had some technique. I like that Jones took that 25 minutes and he took his time. He stayed the course. At the end of the day, he got the minutes in. But he was rusty.”

FOX UFC analyst Tyron Woodley on Jones’ performance: “Sometimes you have those fights when you feel like you’re having a bad dream. He had that. We’re only going to see him get better.”

Evans on Saint Preux’s performance after taking the short notice fight: “That is a win for him. He didn’t embarrass himself. The fact that he could get up so fast when taken down. He never gave up. He hung in there, believed in himself and he grew miles. He showed some power against Jon and gave Jon some things to think about during the fight.”

Woodley on Saint Preux: “I think he needs to move to a big camp and grow into a fighter he should become.”

Evans on if Daniel Cormier had fought Jones tonight: “I picked this fight as the upset of the year when it was DC against Jones. Cormier just had that fight against Alexander Gustafsson, fighting a big guy. This was a different pace than last time with Jones. I don’t think Jon would have fought that way against DC though. I believe he would have fought DC differently.”

Woodley on if Jones fought Cormier tonight: “Jones has shown he fights better when he gets emotional, and no one gets him more emotional than DC. You can’t say that DC would have won tonight.”

Jon Jones on why he seemed disappointed with his performance: “I haven’t gotten to watch the fight yet. I was getting booed. I’ve never been booed in my career. I’m my biggest critic. I had an expectation to beat him, and I didn’t really get to do that.”

Jones on what OSP did well against him: “He went orthodox a lot more that we prepared. I switched up for a southpaw, and then I wasn’t expecting him to stay orthodox and I wasn’t moving the way I was supposed to counter it.”

Jones on flipping off Cormier after the fight: “It was me just being a jerk. He may have been really nice to me calling the fights. I’m not sure. I just wanted to cover my end.”

Daniel Cormier on Jones’ performance: “He got the win. But I’m really disappointed I didn’t fight against him tonight. There’s no way that guy could beat me. I think he did the best he could. Ovince did a great job tonight. He showed Jones some things he hasn’t seen before. There will be some questions when Jon gets back home on Monday. I want nothing more than to fight Jon Jones.”

Evans on Demetrious Johnson’s victory over Henry Cejudo: “DJ is the best. He handles everything on the fly. It’s like he’s got the cheat code. There’s not a circumstance where he doesn’t react and come up with something sinister. I thought Henry Cejudo had a chance with the cinch because of his wrestling skills. That didn’t work.”

Woodley on Johnson’s skills: “We would have never expected DJ to win in the clinch. Henry did not expect to be in that clinch. DJ is so good in that clinch.”

Demetrious Johnson on his finish: “I’m known for my clinch. I did a knee to the liver and heard him go ouch and I knew it was over. I’ll clinch with anyone in this division.”

Johnson on beating Cejudo: “He’s a gold medalist. There are 5,000 gold medalists, but only one flyweight champion – me.”

Dana White on Jon Jones’ return: “Cormier’s dying right now, wishing he was in there. I’m a firm believer in ring rust. Jon looked rusty tonight and it was good that it was OSP tonight. Now Jones knows what he has to do when he gets back in the gym. He went the five rounds. This was good for him.”

White on Ovince Saint Preux: “OSP’s stock went up tonight. He did very well against someone many people believe is one of the best ever. OSP has a broken arm. He suffered it sometime around the fourth round. I don’t know about Jones.”

White on Demetrious Johnson: “I think he’s ridiculously, incredibly talented. He’s awesome. I believe with Joe Rogan that he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.”

White on Edson Barboza vs. Anthony Pettis: “That was my prediction for fight of the night tonight. I agreed with the judges – I gave Barboza the first, Anthony the second and Barboza the third. Anthony looked like he couldn’t pull the trigger. Barboza looked awesome tonight.”
