Cormier on Miocic’s with the heavyweight title: “Stipe is now considered the baddest man on the planet.

Los Angeles – The following quotes and videos are from tonight’s FS1 UFC 198 POSTFIGHT SHOW hosted by Jay Glazer, with Daniel Cormier, Kenny Florian and Stephen Thompson providing analysis. John Gooden conducted interviews.

FOX UFC analyst Daniel Cormier on how Stipe Miocic beat Fabricio Werdum: “Stipe started with feinting and checked Werdum’s low kicks. You saw Werdum get uncomfortable, tried to close the distance and he did it the wrong way. Werdum started to rush in and his chin was in the air. Stipe begged for this fight because he knew he was a bad matchup for Werdum. Stipe prepared for those kicks and checked them.”

FOX UFC analyst Kenny Florian on the crowd affecting Werdum and Miocic silencing them: “There were 45,000 strong watching and they went silent with one punch. You can’t chase an opponent with your chin high against that kind of striker. Werdum attacked on a straight line, and Stipe got an angle and connected. When you rush in on an opponent, it makes impact even bigger. I think Werdum pushed the fight a little too much because of the crowd and being at home.”

FOX UFC analyst Stephen Thompson on what Werdum did wrong against Miocic: “Werdum looked a little out of his comfort zone from the start. He just started going after Stipe and Stipe was backing up, then planted and delivered the knockout punch. It was his footwork and the distance management that was the difference tonight. He has power in that right hand. I said before the fight that if Stipe just landed it one time he could finish it.”

Cormier on how the title changes Miocic: “Stipe is now considered the baddest man on the planet. He’s the heavyweight champion. He went into Brazil with 45,000 fans and won. There’s a swagger that comes with that. He’s now going to get even better with that!”

Stipe Miocic on what surprised him fighting Werdum: “He’s a lot quicker than I thought. I was hitting him with some shots. He started chasing me and I hit him with the right hand and he didn’t like it very much. He started chasing me and I caught him with a good right hand. I have power.”

Miocic on fighting in a stadium with 45,000 Brazilians: “The Brazilian fans are amazing. They support their fighters. They back them up. If you go to see the Cleveland Browns, it’s the same way.”

Miocic on when he knew he’d get Werdum: “I was working on the checks all camp. He kicks hard. I hit him with the first right hand, and I thought I hurt him and he started chasing me and knew I was going to get it.”

Miocic on if he thought Werdum wasn’t ready for the fight: “No. I thought he was a lot quicker than I expected. He was throwing some combinations.”

Miocic on if going into Werdum’s home country affected him: “He’s a champion for a reason. I’m here for business. When I go in there it’s me against another guy. It doesn’t matter if he’s at home or if I’m at home.”

Miocic on when winning the title will sink in: “Maybe tomorrow when I get home to Cleveland and show my mom the belt, maybe that’s when it’ll sink in.”

Miocic on what’s next with the title: “Now I’ve got to keep it. I want to hold it for a while.”

Miocic on who he’s going to show the belt to first when he gets home: “My mom. She’ll be at work. I’m going to put it in my truck and go show her!”

Fabricio Werdum on wanting a rematch: “He beat me for sure. He knocked me out. I think it’s best to have a rematch. I’ve got a six-fight win streak. I’m 100 percent great. I don’t have any injuries. He just landed one punch.”

Werdum on what he could have done differently and when he wants to fight next: “A little more calm. To have five rounds. I think I’m a more complete fighter. The rematch? Soon. Maybe UFC 200.”

Cormier on Jacare Souza beating Vitor Belfort in the first round: “We said this would be a one-takedown fight because Jacare is so good on top. This turned out to be a two takedown fight. The second time Belfort pulled guard, Jacare cut through the butter and got the stoppage. Jacare now puts himself in position for a title fight. Vitor usually blitzes early, but Jacare took the center of the Octagon and didn’t let him do that.”

Florian on Belfort’s turning point in the fight: “Once he was cut, it looked like he wanted out of that fight. If you want to be better, you can’t let someone walk through the guard like that. Maybe Vitor was trying to pace himself, waiting to counter Jacare, but it hurt him.”

Thompson on Belfort not looking up for the fight: “Vitor looked a little too relaxed going into this fight. Jacare did what he was supposed to do, using his striking to get Belfort down. After that elbow, he looked like he didn’t want it anymore and he got finished in the first round.”

Jacare Souza on winning the fight: “That was the plan to totally dominate him. He was a little slow and I was surprised by that. I’m really happy with the victory.”
