Yesterday afternoon Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and the rest of ‘The Moment’ PPV participants made their arrival to the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas, signaling the beginning of fight week. Floyd is once again fighting on Cinco de Mayo weekend, which he joking refers to as Cinco de Mayweather. This time his foe will be Argentinian hard hitter Marcos Maidana, who is heavy betting underdog, even after pulling off an impressive victory over the previously undefeated and two time world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner. For the most part Maidana doesn’t appear to bring the same level of interest that some of Money’s past opponent have, but there is no denying, that with Floyd only having a few fights left in his career, this still a mega event and one which most boxing fans are eager to see.

And so it was interesting, that in the middle of all the fight week hoopla, the topic between Floyd and reporters would shift to the current rift between Golden Boy CEO, Richard Schaefer and owner and founder Oscar de la Hoya.

“Richard knows there’s always a home over here. We would love to work hand in hand with him, if he has a problem over there [Golden Boy Promotions]. Because that’s a company we know Richard Schaeffer built. Richard and Leonard would work hand in and we work hand in hand already. So we would love to work with Richard,” Mayweather would comment went asked about the current problems between Schaefer and De la Hoya.

In a piece today, Kevin Iole would summarize the current situation between Richard Schaefer and Oscar De La Hoya…

It’s hardly a secret that Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, and Oscar De La Hoya, the company’s founder, namesake and president, are at odds.

Schaefer admitted as much to Yahoo Sports in March that he was having problems with De La Hoya, but said at the time he was trying to work out the issues.

“A couple of years ago there were these rumors around that Oscar and me had these issues, but everything got worked out,” Schaefer told Yahoo Sports on March 26. “I’ve been married a long time; actually, tomorrow it will be 21 years. Sometimes, you have issues and you work them out. But you know what? Sometimes you don’t work them out and you wind up not working them out. That’s why sometimes marriages end in divorce. Sometimes, they don’t.

“I have been 14 years here and I have friends who have been friends of mine since childhood. As I said, I’ve been married 21 years. I’m not the kind of guy who walks out if there is the slightest problem. You try to work them out. Sometimes you’re able to work them out and sometimes you are not.”

Before moving on to discuss other topics, Floyd would be asked about whether he would continue to work with Golden Boy Promotions if Richard Schaeffer was not part of the company, to which Mayweather would have a very straight forward response, “Probably not, the reason why I’m working with Golden Boy is because of Richard Schaeffer.”

And so while the world will tune in Saturday night to see if Mayweather improves his unblemished record to 46-0, the boxing world will pay attention as the Oscar de la Hoya- Richard Schaefer story continues to unfold, and prepare for its ramifications.
