Anderson Silva statement

Considered the greatest MMA fighter in the history of the sport, Anderson Silva may have ended his career when he suffered a severe injury to his left leg in the rematch against his conqueror now UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, who ended his seven year winning streak with a second round knockout back on July 6th.

The last fight left question marks of Weidman’s win because of Silva’s showboating, leaving himself expose to a left hook that had him hitting the deck in the second round before the ref stepped in to save him from further damage.

The rematch would end yet again in stunning fashion, after being taken down and dominated on the ground by Weidman in the first round.

The second round would end with Silva throwing an inside leg kick early in the round and collapsing to the canvas in excruciating pain after what seemed to be a solid break of his tibia and fibula in his left leg.

The fight ended immediately giving Weidman a TKO win over Silva who was taken out on a stretcher headed to the hospital to undergo immediate surgery.

“He literally went from here straight to surgery,” said UFC president Dana White during the UFC 168 post-fight press conference.

Zuffa, LLC, owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship®, released the following statement regarding Anderson Silva’s injury.

“Following Saturday evening’s UFC 168 main event, former champion Anderson Silva was taken to a local Las Vegas hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a broken left leg. The successful surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Sanders, the UFC’s Orthopedic Surgeon, inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson’s left tibia. The broken fibula was stabilized and does not require a separate surgery. Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time. Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months.

“Anderson is deeply touched by the outpouring of support from his fans and the entire MMA community. There has been no immediate decision about his future, and he would kindly ask for privacy at this time as he deals with his injury and prepares to return home to recover.”
