Video: “I’m eager to get back in the ring and show people that Abner Mares is back”

Former Three-Division World Champion Abner Mares was in Las Vegas at the final press conference for his fight with Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Oquendo at MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their bout is co-feature for “HONOR & GLORY” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and produced and televised live on SHOWTIME PPV

After the press conference we interviewed Mares to get his thoughts on his bout.

“It feels so good; it feels great [to be back]. I’m eager to get back in the ring and show people that Abner Mares is back. I have to make an example of this guy. I have to show all around what I trained for with my coach Virgil Hunter and show a different Abner.”

A member of the 2004 Mexican Olympic team, 28-year-old Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14 KOs) of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and fighting out of Downey, Calif., earned a spot on boxing’s pound-for-pound list in 2013 when he stopped Ponce De Leon in nine rounds to win his third divisional world title, the WBC Featherweight crown. In his last start on Aug. 24, on SHOWTIME, Mares was upset by Jhonny Gonzalez. But Mares, the previous owner of world championships at bantamweight and super bantamweight is anxious to return to the ring to begin his quest for another world championship
