“La Loba” Muñoz Wants a Shot
With the recent changes in the female bantamweight division, one that is itching for a chance at the crown is former world champion Zulina “La Loba” Muñoz (52-3-2, 30KO) of Mexico City.
Earlier this month Yulihan “La Cobrita” Luna scored a shocking one-sided unanimous decision over long reigning WBC world champion Mariana “Barbie” Juarez. Now with the changing of the guard, Muñoz wants to get in the mix at the top tier of the 118-pound limit.
“I think it would be a very interesting fight,” Muñoz recently stated. “Yulihan is very hungry to show she is a great two-time world champion. I am looking for the same, to be a two-divisional world champion. I think both of us are good boxers with technique and I think it would be great fight inside the ring.”
A veteran of 348 professional rounds, the 33-year-old mother of two captured her first world title in late 2012 with a unanimous decision over Maribel Ramirez. She defended the title a record ten times with impressive wins over an international array of fighters like Tenkai Tsunami of Japan, Alesia Graf of Germany, Renata Domsodi of Hungary, Gabriela Bouvier of Uruguay and Christina McMahon of Ireland among others.
Muñoz jumped up to the bantamweight division late last year and has amassed three straight wins over Sandra Hernandez, Fredee Gonzalez and in her last fight former world title challenger Valeria Perez. With that win “La Loba” captured the vacant WBC International title giving her a top 15 ranking within the division.
Of all the big names in the division, from Juarez to Jackie Nava to Vanessa Taboada, Muñoz is the most available since she does not have scheduled fight and as a free agent is not tied to any promoter opening the avenues for an easy negotiation for world title fight.
“I want that world title at 118 pounds,” Muñoz said confidently. “Now that Mariana lost it, I want Luna since she is now the world champion. I know they are talking about the rematch between ‘La Cobrita’ and Mariana but it doesn’t matter, whoever is the champion that is who I want to face.”
