David Lemiux: I’m not scared of GGG
Everything is also set for the middleweight unification bout between undefeated WBA and WBC Interim middleweight championship Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and IBF champ David Lemieux. This afternoon Golovkin and Lemieux stepped up to the scales and made weight without issues. Golovkin tipped 159.4 lbs on the scales while Lemieux was 159.8 lbs.
Earlier in the week David Lemieux spoke to us about his clash with Gennay Golvokin. Here is what he had to say.
GGG is obviously high regarded in the boxing industry, what did you prepare for and what do you feel you need to do to get the victory?
I need to do, what I need to do. Yes he’s a great fighter, very talented guy. He has a lot of tools that he brings to the table. But I’m very confident in my abilities also. I have a lot of things to show the world. He is very well known, and I’m just getting known. So October 17th, I’m going to show the world what I got.
I read where you mentioned he hasn’t faced someone like yourself. What do you feel like you bring to the table that he hasn’t faced yet?
First of all, I’m not scared of him. A lot of the fighters that he’s faced, before the fight they have already broken down. I have very good power. I have very good boxing skills. I have what I have, that has made me a world champion, and I will use it at its best against Golovkin.
You know most of the time when people talk about you and the fight, the first thing they bring up is your power. How much of a factor do you think your will power will be in this fight and how much of a factor do you think your other assets will be?
I think everything is going to be at its best. I don’t have just power, I have a lot of boxing skills also. If you look at my last fight, I have a lot of tools in the box. So, I’ll be ok because I have a lot more than just punching power.
I read that both Oscar and Bernard Hopkins have been giving you some tips. Obviously they both fought at middleweight, especially Hopkins who was a legend at that weight. What kind of things have they mentioned or what kind of tips have they given you for this fight?
Well, I can’t go too much into details, but they’ve been down this road, especially Hopkins. He mentioned I walked this same legendary walk when I was fighting Tito, and he was saying that he was a big underdog in that fight, and he was telling me how he walked towards that fight, and his footsteps. And I understand what he meant and what he was walking, and he beat Tito and became the undisputed champion.
Last question, obviously the winner of this fight will be lined up to fight the winner of the fight between Miguel Cotto and Saul Canelo Alvarez. I just wanted to get your take on that fight, who do you see winning? And do you think the winner of that fight will really go through with a fight with the winner of your fight with Golovkin.
I’m not really thinking ahead, but Canelo-Cotto is two good fighters, but I’m going with the younger and hungrier fighter for this one. I’m going with Canelo. First me and GGG have to fight and then will move on and see what happens. Right now have the biggest task, I have to take care of Golovkin and then will see what happens with Cotto and Canelo.
