Can Sergey Kovalev be the First Star for Main Events since Arturo Gatti?
Can Sergey Kovalev be the First Star for Main Events since Arturo Gatti?
With a Knockout over Adonis Stevenson He Can
Coming off of a 7th round TKO over the previously undefeated Cedric Agnew, 26-1 with 13 knockouts, the big punching undefeated Russian WBO Lightheavyweight Champion Sergey Kovalev seems to be on the brink of superstardom. After his destruction of Agnew, Kovalev made it a point to call out WBC Lightheavyweight Champion Adonis Stevenson, 23-1 with 20 knockouts. Also a big puncher like Kovalev, Adonis Stevenson would probably be even money vs. Kovalev from a betting standpoint. However, all of the money would be on a knockout, no matter the winner. This is a major fight and a fight both HBO and Showtime would be crazy not to make, especially considering the potential ratings in Canada because of Stevenson living in Laval, Quebec. Originally from Haiti, Stevenson has been winning the Canadian public over with every single knockout, and boxing is big business north of the border. If Sergey Kovalev lands the fight with Adonis Stevenson, wins by knockout and unifies 2 lightheavyweight belts, Main Events will have some serious star power behind the hard hitting and exciting Russian. This fight getting made will be up to the managers, promoters and TV networks because both fighters seem to more than willing as the trash talking has been out of control. Maybe we won’t get Mayweather-Pacquiao, but Kovalev-Stevenson is pretty damn good.
