Andy Vences Media Day at SNAC GYM
By Hector Ruiz
Unbeaten WBC Continental Americas Junior Lightweight champion Andy Vences (17-0 10KOs) looks to continue his impressive start to his career as he makes his first title defense against Angel Hernandez (13-7-1 8KOs) in a 10-round main event of ‘Solo Boxeo’ on UniMas on Friday, March 10th from Tachi Palace Casino and Resort in Lemoore, Ca, promoted by Top Rank Inc.
Coverage on UniMas begins at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT with some getting the fight on tape delay 10PM on the west coast. Andy Vences is the main event of this card.
Vences held a media day today at his sponsor, SNAC, a nutrition company ran by Victor Conte. The gym, which is a private facility, was open to credentialed media for this event.
Here is what Andy Vences had to say:
On returning in a 10-round main event on UniMas:
“It is big. This is my second time main eventing an UniMas card and that means they have big plans for me. I know there will be a step-up in the next fight or two, so I am just mentally preparing myself and getting better and better every fight. It really means a lot to have UniMas and Top Rank’s support.”
On his matchup with Angel Hernandez:
“Angel Hernandez is coming to win, he has coming forward style, always in front of your face, always pushing you to the limits. They can expect fireworks from I would say the second round on.”
On his recent training camp:
“This camp has gone good. I got a new trainer, Angel Cordon, because I am at a new level and I needed a trainer that would take me to the next level. I feel Angel Cordon and my second trainer, Mike Bazell, will take me to that level. I need to be busier in fights, throw more punches and that is what I plan on doing. I know I like to fight at distance, but in this fight I plan on mixing it up fighting at distance and on the inside. So come March 10th I will be ready for anything that presents itself.
On fighting 2 hours from San Jose, CA:
“It is cool, a lot of people who couldn’t make it to Las Vegas for my title over Casey Ramos will be in Lemoore, Ca. Fighting in Vegas, I really enjoyed it and it felt like a mini-vacation for everyone, but fighting here back home feels great. I plan on making a statement against Angel Hernandez. I understand people are writing me off since in 2016 I didn’t get a knockout, but what people have to understand is that I am fighting a higher level of competition and it gets harder to finish fighters at this level.
Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Top Rank Inc are still available with only $125 tickets being available at the present time.
