Yahu “Rock” Blackwell jumps back into the ring March 9 in Tijuana, Mexico

In the sport of boxing, it’s not uncommon for new trends to appear.

These days, we have seen a lot of fighters frequently taking on bouts down in Mexico in places like Tijuana. These off-TV bouts are a great way for fighters to build their record and gain experience away from the spotlight and that’s why you find several pugilists opting for this route.

Cruiserweight prospect Yahu “Rock” Blackwell is about to join the list of those venturing down south, as the Nigerian fighter fights on March 9 in Tijuana inside of the Escape Sport’s Bar.

An accomplished amateur with a 156-28 record, Blackwell spent his recent years in the sport competing in the International Boxing League, which is a professional boxing tournament outside of the traditional ABC. While in the IBL, Blackwell went 15-0 and captured the WBU novice world championship.

A closer look at Yahu’s YouTube and Instagram pages show his recent progress, as well as offering an insight into his jovial personality.

“I’m so excited about getting back in the ring!,” Yahu exclaimed of his March 9 assignment. “We’ve been working extremely hard over the years. Training day and night! I am more the ready to honor Yahuah, myself, my mother, and my people of Yahudi.”

Yahu is advised by legendary referee and boxing luminary Joe Cortez, who was a stellar amateur and capable professional fighter himself.

During a recent interview in Las Vegas, Cortez addressed his connection to Yahu.

“He’s very devoted to the sport,” Cortez says of the Hebrew fighter. “I think he has the potential. He’s always in the gym and listens to my advice. He wants to learn and be a great fighter and we got the potential to go all the way.”

For Blackwell, March 9 represents not just a showcase fight, but also a step in the right direction towards him hopefully capturing a world title himself. Tijuana is the next step.
