UFC FIGHT NIGHT: MACHIDA VS ROCKHOLD EARLY FIGHT RESULTS
Max Holloway defeats Cub Swanson via submission at 3:58 of the 3rd round
Max Holloway: “I hit him with a left hand and I hurt him, but he didn’t show it. I jumped on him and he had his head straight forward, so I got a couple good strikes in and got the guillotine. I want to be the best in the world, and if you’re not here for that reason then you’re just going through the motions. My coaches and teammates and training partners are the best guys in the world. We’ve got something great here in Hawaii – stay tuned.
I want to beat the guys who beat me and I want that win back over Conor McGregor. He keeps saying the only reason he didn’t finish me is because he had a hurt knee. It’s disrespectful. So, let’s test that. I’d love to fight him again, but I’ll fight anyone any time, any place.”
VanZant defeats Herrig via unanimous decisions with scores 30-27, -30-26 twice.
Paige VanZant: “I was the underdog, I was supposed to lose. It’s a huge victory for me and I’m still in shock. I had God in my corner and an amazing camp. I’m nowhere near peaked and I’ve got a lot of work to do. I’m here for the fun of it and I’m so thankful. I can’t believe I made it through that fight. It only goes up from here.”
Beneil Dariush defeats Jim Miller via unanimous decision
Beneil Dariush: “That was my second fight in 33 days. I didn’t think fighting this quickly would affect my performance, but I did feel a little bit sloppy. I honestly thought I would get finished, I felt sloppy in the standup and my timing wasn’t as good as I thought. I’m glad I got the win, but again, I felt sloppy and I have a lot more to show.”
Jim Miller: “The game plan was to go after him. I figured I would have an advantage on the feet. We had a fast paced first round and I could feel it take it’s toll on me, unfortunately. No excuses. He fought a great fight and he took it to me.”
Ovince Saint Preux defeats Cummins via KO at 4:54 of the first round.
Ovince Saint Preux: “I knew the number one thing coming into this fight was to stop his takedowns and throw that upper cut. I knew one of those were going to catch him and drop him. Pretty much all of my combinations had something to do with an upper cut. The minute I landed it, I knew I hit him pretty clean, so I jumped on him and finished it. I made my UFC debut here, and it didn’t go how I planned. So coming back here, I just wanted to give you guys a good show. Hopefully, I gave you all a good show. I definitely want to be on the Nashville, Tennessee card. Ovince Saint Preux versus anybody!”
Gian Villante defeats Corey Anderson via TKO at 4:18 of the 3rd round
Gian Villante: “I tried to punish his legs, and just punish him any way I could. I knew I had to throw that right hand. This is such a great feeling to win so close to home.”
Corey Anderson: “That was a war! It was fun though. As an MMA fighter, you want a challenge, and that was a challenge for me. That was my first loss, but a big step up to the plate against a veteran of the sport. I hung in there with him. I had 50 seconds left and I dropped my hands. It’s a little mistake that I’ve got to work on. It’s nothing to beat myself up over. I’ve just got to get back to work.”
Aljamain Sterling defeats Takeya Mizugaki via submission at 2:11 of the 3rd round
Aljamain Sterling: “My performance wasn’t what I wanted it to be. But I got the finish, which is more than I could’ve asked for. I gassed out a little bit, more than I normally do, but I did what I was supposed to do. I wrote down in my book what I wanted to do, which was to get a finish. I knew Takeya was a well-rounded veteran and he’s fought the toughest guys around and I knew he was going to be there to fight the entire time. I’d like another Top 10 fighter next.”
Takeya Mizugaki: “Aljamain didn’t allow me to do anything I wanted or planned to do. He really crushed my game plan.“
Tim Means defeats George Sullivan via submission at 3:41 of the 3rd round
Tim Means: “It was a last minute fight. I got started a little late and I knew I just needed to pick up the tempo, which I feel like I did in the third round. I could hear him gassing out, so I just needed to keep the pressure on him. We’ve been working a lot on submissions, so tonight I was hoping to get a submission or a knockout. The mission was to get a finish, and that’s what happened.”
Diego Brandao defeats Jimy Hettes via TKO at 5:00 in the first round
Diego Brandao: “I thought the judge called it right. His ear looked bad. Was the result of an elbow I threw early in the round. I was ready to continue, wanted to continue, but I think it was the right call. It didn’t finish the way I wanted. I really wanted a knockout. No pressure on this fight. I was just really excited and now happy I got the win.”
Jimy Hettes: “Right now, this sucks and this is the worst thing in the world. I know the doctor wouldn’t have stopped it if there wasn’t a reason. It just seems like I’ve run into a lot of bad luck lately, and this is one of those times where I hope everything happens for a reason.”
Middleweight Chris Dempsey win wins a split decision over Eddie Gordon.
Chris Dempsey: “I definitely thought I did enough for the win. It was a war and I was preparing for a war. I just knew I had more heart than him – not just him, but more heart than anybody. He’s a tough dude, and that could’ve gone either way. His wrestling defense was a lot better than I thought it would be, but other than that, this is just what we expected.”
Eddie Gordon: “That decision was absurd. I rocked him in the first round. In the second round, I out-struck him, took him down and was on top of him for over half of the round. The third round was still my round! He got one takedown at the end, but I still out-struck him, and I stopped 90% of his takedowns. This was not even close. It was absurd.”
