Trout leaves No Doubt in decision over Cotto

Undefeated WBA junior middleweight champion from Las Cruces, New Mexico, Austin “No Doubt” Trout (26-0, 14 KOs) won a unanimous decision in the back yard of yet another fighter in Puerto Rican superstar from Caguas Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KOs).

Cotto began the fight strong by pressing Trout from the opening bell and landing counter lefts to the body and head. Cotto also did some good bodywork when both men traded on the inside.

By the middle rounds Cotto began to slow down, while Trout stayed consistent on his attack. Using his right jab consistently from his southpaw stance and landing his straight left at times.

Cotto would seem to pull out close rounds with a flurry at the end of some of the rounds to steer the judges decision his way but in the last few rounds Cotto seemed to tire and Trout began to land at will.

The twelfth was more of Cotto just doing enough to survive the round while Trout continually kept pressuring Cotto, landing at will.

Some who probably felt that Miguel could never lose a decision in his backyard were wrong. When the scores were announced unanimous decision 117-111, 117-111, 119-109 and still was uttered throughout the arena it was clear that Trout left No Doubt in the judges decision.

At the post fight press Trout, despite believing that he won was surprised at the large margin in the scoring.

“Because it was in Madison Square Garden there were a lot of close rounds I felt I pulled out but didn’t know if I was going to get it. So with that mindset that you know, if it’s a close round you got it but then you think you lost it. I guess I think it was closer for the cards say.

But if there is any doubt if I won or not. I am up to doing it again if we need too”.

An emotional and bruised Miguel Cotto expressed his feeling of a decision not going his way.

“A little disappointed at the decision of the judges but I have to continue. I have to accept it and I am looking forward that’s all I have to say”.

When asked if he gave retirement some thought Cotto response was.

“I am just thinking of passing Christmas with my family. Rest a little bit and take this time just to think you know. I am not finished yet……I am still with boxing in my mind. I just want to rest the rest of the year.”
