Tiny Tornado Warning
The strawweight division is packed with talent and further proof is the constant change happening from a new crowned champion to new contenders rising in the ranking. Among those ready to step up and display their talent is Tecia Torres (5-0).
Her next fight is scheduled for UFC 188 where she takes on Angela Hill. It is part of the highly anticipated card where Cain Velasquez defends the UFC Heavyweight title versus Fabricio Werdum.
“I think Angela Hill’s way of being relevant is by trying to get attention by making stupid memes of me and putting them online. My way of being relevant is with my fists on June 13,” said Torres.
The event takes place in Mexico City on June 13. Torres looks forward to fighting in front of the Latino crowd and felt the admiration of the fans on a recent trip to Mexico while doing some promotion there. Torres who is Puerto Rican said she appreciates the fans all over Latin America.
“This is a really good opportunity to show the world who I am as a fighter. I want a win and one that will be remembered. The fans are really nice in Mexico and really knowledgeable,” said Torres.
The undefeated fighter represents American Top Team and knows that being ranked in the top five by the UFC means it’s just a matter of time before she gets her shot at gold.
“We have a good amount of women fighters at our gym. If Dana is listening and ever wanted to do an Ultimate Fighter he could do ATT vs Jackson’s,” said Torres.
Torres was a member of the Ultimate Fighter last year that saw the show crown the first UFC Strawweight champion. She now sees her team compete against The Blackzilians on the current season which airs on Fox Sports 1 every Wednesday night. It’s the first time that two teams compete outside of Vegas as it was filmed in South Florida.
Her mixed results on the show weren’t to her expectations but she now feels that she is in the position to make a run at the title.
“You see on the show what I lacked was my wrestling. Since then I have been working on that and look forward to showcasing my skills. I work with Mike Brown on my wrestling and he’s great having been a former WEC Champion,” said Torres.
“I want to become champion and hold that belt. I don’t want to win a fight and lose it. I want to create the Tiny Tornado legacy,” said Torres.
The 25-year-old is very ambitious and confident but not without cause. She has defeated fighters like Felice Herrig and Paige VanZant on her way to the UFC. Both of whom fought a few weeks back in a fight that saw VanZant win a unanimous decision over the veteran and receive high praise. This serves as motivation for Torres who makes it no secret that she doesn’t share the same opinion.
“It’s weird when I see people fight that I’ve beat already and they are put on such a high pedestal. I get it that Paige is beautiful and she’s winning. If they give her a rematch with me I’ll do the same thing I did before and dominate her again,” said Torres.
Even with others winning in the division, Torres knows she’s closer to where she can earn a title show by just winning and staying busy. With a victory in June, she plans to stay busy and fight two more times before the year ends.
“Now that title is open for someone to grab it. Within the next fights we’ll see what happens. I’m still growing as a fighter and I don’t want to rush anything. Whoever Sean Shelby thinks I should fight next. Two more fights and if the title shot comes, I’ll take it and be ready,” said Torres
