Ronda Rousey is ready for Rio
With just a few days left before her main event fight, UFC Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has her sights set on not only winning but her future plans. The main event of UFC 190 is taking place in Brazil and Rousey is keeping an eye on the division and her future movie projects.
Even with talk of a new project with Mark Wahlberg set, she is all business when it comes to her role in the UFC and how she maintains her position.
“I feel a lot of responsibility. I want to be the most reliable champ in the company. It’s not that I’ve never had an injury for a fight but I’ve never pulled out of one because of it,” said Rousey.
Any fighter will tell you that by the time fight night arrives, they have their share of bumps and bruises but Rousey refuses to not perform after the stage has been set.
“Whenever they’ve called me, I have always showed up. Plus I need the challenge. Taking this one when I don’t have the home court advantage keeps me motivated,” said Rousey.
That type of attitude has made her a fan favorite and seen her become the most dominant champion in the UFC.
Even with the challenge of Bethe Correia here, Rousey explains why she is so confident in her abilities as a fighter. It’s a self-belief that she attributes to her growing up in the sport of judo while competing at the highest levels.
“I’ve been doing this for so long. It wasn’t like I just walked into a gym one day or my boyfriend was a fighter and I wanted to give it a try. This is my life. I’ve spent my whole life doing this,” said Rousey.
The two time Olympian is honest about her life always revolving around judo and now fighting. Her mother AnnMaria De Mars was the first American woman to win the world judo championship. Rousey says that growing up in that environment made it easy for her mother to be her motivation and the person who inspired her the most.
“I try to show my nieces and nephew and little sister that ambition and hard work is a good thing. That it pays off and honesty is a good thing. It was my mom. It really was and not because she was the first American to win but because she was innovative. She was the original arm bar lady,” said Rousey.
Rousey realizes that with Miesha Tate’s latest victory over Jessica Eye, she is now in position to challenge the champion a third time.
“These girls are like crops. Sometimes you harvest a crop and it grows back like Miesha and some don’t. I don’t think Bethe is coming back after this. I think this is the final season I can harvest the Tate crop,” said Rousey.
The hope is that the challenges will continue to grow for Rousey in order to satisfy her competitive drive. The next one is Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
