Rico Mueller to defend IBO I/C title against Jorgensen on August 3
All young fighters dream of becoming world champion one day. Promising 25-year-old German welterweight prospect Rico Mueller (14-1) is no excpetion to that rule. On August 3rd, Mueller is looking to take another step towards reaching his big goal in his hometown Eberswalde (Germany) when the reigning IBO intercontinental champion is set to defend his title against Norwegian toughguy Geir Inge Jorgensen (28-2).
„I am looking forward to fighting at home in front of my family and friends. This is always a very special thing to me“, says Mueller. „I am in great shape and I promise my fans an exciting fight. I will surely not underestimate Jorgensen. But I want to get all the way to the top and I know that I have to beat him to get there.“
By trying to secure a shot at the IBO world championship Mueller is looking to join titleholders such as heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko and middleweight monster Gennady Golovkin. „Those are big names and great champions“, adds Rico. „I hope to one day get to the point where they are now. I know that I got a long way to go though.“
At least Mueller knows how it feels to wear a golden belt around his waste. In January 2011 he became IBO Youth welterweight champion by outscoring Nestor Faccio from Argentina. Now he wants to underline his claims at the „big“ world title by beating Jorgensen who has never been knocked down in his pro career.
„Of course, I would love to knock him out but this is something you cannot plan or force“, states Mueller. „I just have to do my job in the ring. Everything else happens by itself.“
On the undercard former IBF world championess Jennifer Retzke is looking to win the IBO title against Florenze Muthoni and Robert Maess takes on Prinz Issa El Sleiman fort he German welterweight championship. The show on August 3rd will be Open Air at „Family Garden“ in Eberswalde and starts at 5pm local time. Tickets are available on eventim.de or rico-mueller.de starting at 20,- Euros.
