PETER MCDONAGH AIMS TO BE “THE CINDERELLA MAN” JUNE 8TH
London (5 June) Peter McDonagh aims to be the “Cinderella man” and feels he is now at the “peak” of his career.
The 35-year-old former BBBofC Southern Area lightweight and Irish lightweight champion believes he can now “show off” his boxing skills and aim at a European title shot.
“I’ve had a hard career and people know me now as a fighter, respect me as a fighter, I’ve paid my dues and I deserve my chance,” McDonagh said.
“I’ve boxed all over the world and if I can put on a good performance maybe Mick Hennessy can get me something else and you never know – I’m going to be the Cinderella man.”
McDonagh, 35, has a record of 18 wins with two knockouts and 28 losses with only two knockouts, but feels that being the home fighter will give him the right platform to move forward with his career.
“I’ve boxed every style you can box and nothing fazes me and the greatest thing I’ve got is a great chin, so I’ll always be in a great fight,” McDonagh said.
“I just cant wait, I believe now that I can show all my skills off – I’m stronger, more mature, a fully fledged man now and I feel like I’m at the peak of my career.
“The first thing I’m looking for is an Irish title fight, that sticks me in the top 10 in Europe and then I’ll be looking closely at Lenny Daws against Michele Di Rocco for the European title – I’ve boxed Di Rocco before and thought I nicked it in Italy against him.
“I want to look beyond winning an Irish title, I’ve been Irish champion, I want to be Irish champion again and then maybe a European title shot or something.”
Born in Galway, Ireland, McDonagh of Bermondsey, London, fights on the James DeGale undercard at Glow, Bluewater, on Saturday 8th June.
The Hennessy Sports show, live on Channel 5 in the UK from 9.30pm and on Wealth TV in the US, features WBC Silver super-middleweight champion James DeGale defending his title against Croatian fighter Stjepan Bozic.
