Mayweather Easily Decisions Guerrero In May Day PPV Headliner At MGM Grand
The sell-out crowd of boxing aficionados on hand at the MGM Grand Garden Arena were treated to another vintage Floyd “Money” Mayweather performance tonight as the current king of boxing events out pointed Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero in their WBC welterweight title fight by scores all across the board of (117-111). Mayweather landed about 60 percent of his total punches, a success rate that’s rare at this level of the sport when elite fighters collide in the ring. This was also a result of Mayweather’s ability to land his straight right hand from all angles in just about every stanza of the 12-round affair against the south paw opponent. Guerrero did his best to approach the fight from a different look as the rounds progressed by trying to trap the unbeaten champion in the corners of the ring but as soon as he threw his left cross or overhand right, Mayweather ducked, slipped and dodged the punches thanks to his masterful footwork. When he wasn’t connecting with his right hand, Mayweather also caught his foe with an accurate left hook at close quarters and strategically clinched his man before any offense from Guerrero could materialize.
The return of the unbeaten “Pound For Pound” fighter ends an absence from the sport that is almost a year to the date however, the Michigan-born star looked as sharp as ever in headlining at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino against his Californian adversary. Mayweather’s name continues to prove a success in any box office which was also proven by the close to 10 million dollar gate tonight and an attendance of 15,880. The unanimous decision triumph raises Floyd Mayweather’s record to 44-0 as he defends his throne atop the boxing kingdom while Robert Guerrero drops to 31-2-1 as he suffers only the second loss in his professional career. Golden Boy Promotions’ Richard Schafer stated in the post fight press conference that they “will be back in September and at the MGM Grand” so fans will only have to wait a few months to witness the fighter’s next defense of his titles, unbeaten streak or top status in the world of boxing.
Mares Stops Ponce De Leon In 9 For Newest Championship Victory
Abner Mares continued his tenacious run in a new weight class tonight as he challenged Daniel Ponce De Leon for the WBC Featherweight Title in the night’s co-main event. The fighters started at a fast pace and kept the action at close range round after round. This was evident in the 2nd round when a perfectly timed Mares left hook followed by a right cross sent Ponce De Leon to the mat. Fortunately for the Mexico native, this happened with just a couple of seconds left in the round as he was giving the count by Jay Nady just before the 60 minute break. Both men exchanged success during the next few rounds as Mares looked to counter and caught his man with some flush right hands as he came in. While on the other hand, Ponce De Leon was able to throw his patented overhand left and back up his foe before following up with some straights.
During the 9th round, the two fighters temporarily tangled up after an exchange but as soon as they created some distance off of their clinch, both warriors threw power punches. Mares’ was more lethal as he landed a rocket right hand that cracked Ponce De Leon’s chin sending him down. He beat the count but only to find himself along the ropes as Mares walked him down. A couple more rights followed that landed clean followed by a flurry before the referee jumped in to prevent any more unnecessary damage to Ponce De Leon. The official time of Abner Mares’ latest TKO win came at (2:20) of the 9th round as he captures the WBC Featherweight belt.
Santa Cruz Cruises To TKO Win Over Munoz

Using his solid combinations and deadly left hook, Santa Cruz conquered every round of the match. He beat the count but would find himself on the floor again the 5th round thanks to Santa Cruz’ relentless attack. Again he was along the ropes, and again Santa Cruz was coming forward with some offensive heat, sending his man toppling along the ropes and unto the canvas. Munoz’ corner instinctively threw in the towel to let his man take the loss but come back stronger another day.
The official time of the TKO victory for Leo Santa Cruz came at (1:04) of the 5th round as he captures the USBA Junior Featherweight strap with the win over Alexander Munoz.
Love Overcomes Knockdown To Earn Split Verdict Over A Game Rosado
Las Vegas resident, J’Leon Love, easily skated across the ring as he worked angles and snapped his jab against his opponent, Gabriel Rosado for 5 rounds avoiding any hard as he banked the first few rounds of the match. Unfortunately in the 6th, Love planted his feet more to trade and got caught in an exchange with Rosado who landed a flush right hand unto his chin. Immediately, Love went to the canvas from the punch but beat the count which luckily happened just a few seconds before the round ended. Rosado was able to make it more of a match at close quarters as he now implemented a triple or quadruple jab to get in on the inside and rip away at his foe’s body and head. Love stood his ground and backed his man up with some combinations and body work of his own as they headed down the stretch. Rosado never found the same opening again but stayed in it for the remaining rounds before the final bell sounded.
Once the judges scorecard’s were announced; one of them had it a wide margin of (97-92) and the other (95-94) for Love while the remaining judge saw it (95-94) but for Rosado. Nonetheless, J’Leon Love remains undefeated thanks to the split decision victory as Gabriel Rosado hopes for an immediate rematch sometime this summer.
