Matthews out, Arnfield in – Blackwell gets new British title challenger for November 14
LONDON (6 NOVEMBER) British middleweight champion Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell will now defend his title against Blackpool’s Jack Arnfield, following the withdrawal of original opponent Elliott Matthews, on November 14 at Bristol’s City Academy, subject to final approval from the British Boxing Board of Control.
Watford’s Matthews picked up a cut in sparring on Friday (November 6) and Arnfield, on stand-by for a number of weeks now, was quick to fill the void and grab the chance of a lifetime.
The 26-year-old has been a professional for eight years and has won 19 of 20 professional fights. Effectively unbeaten, his sole loss, over three rounds to Cello Renda, came in a 2015 Prizefighter tournament. That aside, though, he has comfortably beaten everybody in his path and claimed good wins over the likes of Max Maxwell and Mick Hall.
His last fight, an eight-round points win over Deividas Sajauka (a late replacement for Cello Renda, who was due to face Arnfield in a British title eliminator), took place on October 24. He has been in full training ever since.
