Lomachenko vs. Walters / Undercard Results Recap From Cosmopolitan
Trevor McCumby (24-0) vs. Donovan George (25-7-2)
Light Heavyweight Bout – 8 Rounds
The third fight on the Top Rank on-line stream featured 175ers in McCumby and George. Arizona’s McCumby got off to a fast start coming forward on his man giving him the business by way of hard, compact hooks along the ropes or solid right hand punches.
About 20 seconds into Round 1 the Arizona representative clobbered George with a mean overhand right that sent his man crumbling to the canvas along the corner of the ring. McCumby smelled blood and charged his man following the 8-count with a barrage of punches, leading with another overhand right or finishing a combination with that same punch.
He let his hands go storming his opponent across the ring, backing him up along the corner as George decided to go outon his shield. The Chicago native partially covered up before swinging away with a Hail Mary left hook or two but him opening up allowed McCumby to land some more unanswered rights as he mixed in brutal combinations. Referee Robert Byrd stepped in to prevent any more damage to the fighter calling a stop to the match.
RESULTS: Trevor McCumby remains undefeated stopping Donovan George via TKO at (1:48) of Round 1.
Efrain Cruz (4-3-1) vs. Maxim Dadashev (5-0)
Super Lightweight Bout – 8 Rounds
The second match of the evening featured Puerto Rico’s Cruz taking on Oxnard, California’s Dadashev in a 140-pound fight. Cruz landed a fast left hook early in the opening seconds of Round 1 waking up as well as really frustrating his opponent. The Puerto Rican fighter’s upper body movement, slick side to side footwork and ability to slip punches befuddled his man for much of the first stanza and combined with Dadashev chasing him in order to land something back resulted in a good round for Cruz.
An irritated Dadashev forced the shots for those three minutes when they were along the ropes rather than set them up using his solid jab. He had some success with the punches but came up just shy of a game changer since they were fighting just outside of his range. In the final 30 seconds of the match Cruz bent down then came back up top with a clean right hook to punctuate the 1st Round.
Going into Round 2 the dynamics of the battle changed drastically as Cruz elected to stand and trade rather than use his legs. This enabled the California native to completely take over as he raked Cruz across the body and head with power punches via overhand rights or hard left hooks on the inside. They stood in the pocket and immediately Dadashev was quicker, faster and more accurate.
Now fighting at Dadashev’s distance, he was able to really open up and land blow after blow staggering his foe multiple times. ’Mad’ Maxim partially landed a winging right hook along the blue corner of the ring that had referee Kenny Bayless thinking of stepping in, then a follow-up left hook landed clean sending Cruz stubbling backwards trying to catch himself ala Floyd Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton. Cruz wasn’t as graceful stumbling backwards like Mayweather was and it was clear he was seriously hurt, prompting referee Kenny Bayless to step in and call a halt to the action.
RESULTS: ’Mad’ Maxim Dadashev remains undefeated stopping Efrain Cruz via TKO at (1:57) of Round 2.
Juan Jose Ruiz (18-0-0-1) vs. Fernando Carcamo (21-8)
Welterweight Bout – 8 Rounds
Opening the 2,000th show for Top Rank Promotions live from the beautiful Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas were 147lbs fighters ‘El Nino’ Ruiz and Mexico’s Carcamo. After about 30 seconds of trading shots in the center of the squared circle, Ruiz sent Carcamo to the canvas with a beautiful 1-2 combination along the corner. The game Mexican warrior rose to his feet and marched on but he never looked like he fully recovered from the hard knock down; taking 2 or 3 shots for every one that he threw.
Moments later the unbeaten Venezuelan walked his foe down to the opposite corner and began landing clean combinations seemingly at will. If it wasn’t Ruiz’ left hook making his man’s head snap back a wicked uppercut did the trick. With about a minute left Ruiz doubled up on the uppercut landing flush then finished with a right hand, at this point the 147-pound match looked more like target practice for ‘El Nino’ Ruiz who became a hurricane of crisp and precise punches.
With less than 15 seconds left in the bout Ruiz had his foe near the ropes again and this time perfectly timed Carcamo with a left hook-right hand counter that landed clean on his opponent’s chin sending him flat on his back unto the canvas. Referee Robert Byrd alertly waived his arms in the air calling a stop to the bout completely skipping an 8-count to save Carcamo from any further punishment.
RESULTS: Juan Jose ‘El Nino’ Ruiz remains undefeated stopping Fernando Carcamo by TKO at (2:43) of Round 1.
