Golden Boy on ESPN Results: Orozco stops Gibson in 4
In a 10-round super lightweight main event for the vacant WBC USNBC Super Lightweight Championship, live from The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and broadcast live on Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN, Antonio “Relentless” Orozco improved to (26-0, 17 KOs) with a technical knockout over KeAndre “The Truth” Gibson (16-1-1, 7 KOs). Official time of the stoppage was 1:31 of the 4th round. With the victory Orozco picked up the vacant WBC USNBC Super Lightweight Championship, and gets one step closer towards a world title.
“From start to finish, I stuck to the fundamentals in this fight,” said Orozco. “I’m very happy to have won this fight, and now it’s time to go home to my family.”
In the co main event of the ESPN televised portion of the card, Mercito “No Mercy”Gesta made his return to the ring after been out for a year and half and defeated Gilberto “El Flaco” Gonzalez (27-4, 22 KOs) by unanimous decision. The judges scored the fight 99-91, 98-92, 96-93 all for Gesta who improved to (30-1-2, 16 KOs). Gesta was dropped in the third round, and faced a game Gonzalez for all 10 rounds. In the end the judges gave the fight to Gesta who was the busier fighter through the fight.
“I listened to my corner in the fight, and never let my opponent get too close,” said Gesta. “I’m happy with the outcome and I plan to lie low after this.”
Up and coming prospect Joet Gonzalez of Glendora, California obtained a technical knockout over Derrick Murray to improve his undefeated record to (16-0, 8 Kos). Gonzalez was the aggressor from the opening bout, and was winning after 5 rounds when the referee decided he had seen enough and put a halt to the bout. Official time of the stoppage 56 seconds of the fifth round.
“Going in, I wanted to be smart and cut him off,” said Gonzalez. “Overall, this was a great fight and I’m happy to have another victory.”
In the opening bout, Emilio Sanchez of Pacoima, California improved to (15-0, 10 Kos) with an 8th round technical knockout over Jose Bustos (11-8-3, 7Kos). “My plan going in to the fight was to be smart and not get hit,” said Sanchez. “I didn’t plan on knocking him out in the last round, the knockout came on its own, and I’m happy with the outcome.”
With famed trainer Manny Robles in his corner, Sanchez will look to continue growing in 2017.
