GAVIN READY TO STUFF WELBORN

British Welterweight Champion Frankie Gavin will miss out on Christmas dinner but says he’ll make up for it by feasting on challenger Jason Welborn on Friday 18th January at Walsall Town Hall.

Unbeaten Gavin will train throughout the festive season as he prepare to make the first defence of the title that he won last month when he outclassed former champ Junior Witter, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).

The 27-year-old from Birmingham met head-to-head with his West Midlands rival today and says he’ll be hungry for the big finish on the night.

“Training and watching what you eat for a fighter is hard at the best of times, but doing it over Christmas and New Year is an absolute nightmare,” Said Gavin

“I love my Christmas dinner, especially my mum’s, she does a blinding job with the turkey, roast potatoes and all the trimmings, but this year all it’s going to be is a bit of boiled chicken with a small portion of rice,”

“Normally you need some hate to fire you up for a fight, but this will make me a hungry fighter on the night and I’ll be tearing into Wellborn instead with plenty of big shots, he’ll get a good stuffing for sure,”

Welborn is coming off a good ten round points win over Jan Balog at the Civic Hall last month, with three back-to-back stoppages prior to that and has only lost once in twelve fights, but Gavin is confident he has the tools to stop him.

He added, “Welborn is a good strong fighter and comes forward, it will be totally different to the Witter fight which was awkward and messy until I started to get through to him,”

“With my aggressive counter-punching it will be a good fight and I’ll be hitting him with plenty of combinations that will make me look good,”

“This is the start of a big year for me and Welborn is in the way.”

Gavin v Welborn, promoted by Frank Warren and Errol Johnson, headlines a three title card also featuring Walsall’s Martin Gethin against Hove’s Ben Murphy for the Vacant British and Commonwealth Lightweight Championship and the Vacant English Cruiserweight Championship between Walsall’s Chris Keane and Bulwell’s Shane McPhilbin.

An action-packed undercard includes Stourbridge welterweight Steven Pearce; Stafford middleweight Grant Cunningham; Cannock light-welterweight Dave Egan and Burton-on-Trent light-welter Tom Shaw.
