GAVIN: I’LL BEAT VASSELL WITH BOXING SCIENCE
Frankie Gavin says he’ll be too quick and clever for Denton Vassell when they clash at the Liverpool Olympia on Friday 28th June.
The Birmingham ace puts his British Welterweight title on the line against Vassell’s Commonwealth belt in a battle of the unbeaten champions in the potential thriller, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).
Gavin, 27, Britain’s only ever world amateur champion, is regarded as one of the most naturally talented fighters in the country and uses his quick counter-punching style to pick apart his opponents.
It’s the biggest test of Gavin’s 16 fight career against the Manchester powerhouse who has stopped 10 out of his 20 opponents early, including Gavin’s former stablemate Ronnie Heffron last time out.
But Gavin is confident his superior technical skill will win him the fight, but is prepared to stand and trade with Vassell when he wants to.
“Boxing’s about hitting and not getting hit, I’m not going to take one just to land one on Vassell. I can beat him with speed, angles and counter-punching and I’ll bamboozle him with boxing science”,said Gavin.
“I’m looking forward to the fight, it’s a real test against another undefeated British fighter with a title that will push me onto the next level in my career”.
“Vassell’s a good fighter and he’s unbeaten for a reason. I rate him highly, but I’ve been watching him for a long time and I know his limitations and how to exploit them. I’ll show everyone that brain will overcome brawn”.
“I know that Vassell will try to rough me and will want to stand and trade, I’ve got no problem doing that, but I will do it on my terms when I’m ready and if I need to”.
Gavin added that his clash against Vassell, plus the recent announcement that Billy Joe Saunders will defend his British Middleweight title against rival John Ryder in September, is great for British boxing.
“The fans want to see the best fight the best in Britain. My fight against Vassell and Saunders versus Ryder are two of the biggest domestic clashes at the moment. It’s great for the sport that these fights are happening and can only give boxing a boost”.
“My fight against Vassell is the kind of fight I want. I’m up against it and that’s when I perform to my best. People will sit up and take notice that I’m not afraid to put my title and record on the line against another unbeaten champion like Vassell”.
“Saunders is like me, when he’s up against it he’s at his best. It’s a cracking fight against Ryder and I’m really looking forward to it, but I see comfortable win for Saunders who I believe is leagues above Ryder in terms of talent”.
Gavin v Vassell headlines an action-packed show that also feature the exciting, hard-hitting, Ellesmere Port ace Paul Butler in a challenge for the WBO International Super-Flyweight Championship as he looks to secure a third title alongside his British and Commonwealth belts.
Also showcasing their talent will be Merseyside stars Liam Smith, Joe Selkirk and Stephen Smith, plus Manchester’s Joe Murray and Rhys Roberts.
