Friday Night Fights Results

Boxing fans were treated to an action packed edition of Friday Night Fights live from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada presented by Top Rank boxing and broadcast by ESPN2. The card featured a couple of fights in the super middleweight division on the televised portion.

Giovanni Lorenzo 33-6 Bronx, NY vs Gilberto Ramirez 27-0  Mazatlan, Mex

In the main event undefeated Mexican Super Middleweight Gilberto Ramirez put on an impressive performance by stopping veteran Giovanni Lorenzo in the 5th round. Ramirez who is 6’3 used his height and reach advantage along with his southpaw stance to trouble Lorenzo.

 

Ramirez unleashed a flurry of punches on Lorenzo in the 3rd round and finally dropped Lorenzo with a left uppercut. He finishes the round with a barrage of punches as the bell rings to end the round.

 

The end came in the 5th round as two knockdowns was enough for the corner of Lorenzo who would throw in the towel forcing referee Jay Nady to stop the fight. The official time of the stoppage was 2;47 of the 5th round. With the victory Ramirez becomes the NABO Super Middleweight champion.

4 rounds Super Welterweights

 

German Valdez 3-3-1 Agua Prieta, Mex  vs Danny Valdivia 2-0 (2 ko) Bakersfield, CA

 

In the first fight of the card undefeated prospect Danny Valdivia improved his record to 3-0 with a unanimous decision 40-36 on all three judges cards . Working behind a quick right hand and uppercut he was able to do enough in every round to control the action. The Bakersfield, California prospect shows real ability and talent in only his third fight of his young career.

8 rounds Lightweight

 

Alejandro Rodriguez 18-13 Guadalajara, Mex  vs Lydell Rhodes 19-0 (9ko) Spencer, OK

 

The second fight of the night was a closely fought contest for 6 rounds. In the end it was a matter of opinion for the judges. Were they in favor of Rodriguez and his harder shots or Rhodes who had the faster hands. One judge saw it an even fight with a scorecard of 57-57 while the two other judges had it scored  58-56 in favor of Lydell Rhodes by majority decision.

 

8 rounds Super Middleweights (NABF title)

 

Samuel Clarkson 10-2 Cedar Hill, TX vs Jesse Hart 12-0 (10 ko) Philadelphia, PA

 

The first of two television fights saw Jesse Hart remain undefeated by earning an 8 round unanimous decision. The 4th round  was the most dominant for Hart as he scored two knockdowns over Clarkson. While it looked like the end was near, Clarkson managed to survive and escape the round.

 

Perhaps the volume of punches took a toll on the undefeated southpaw who would do enough over the next 4 rounds to cruise to a decision. The scorecards read as follows 80-70 on all three judge’s cards. With the victory Hart is now 13-0 and the new  NABF Super Middleweight champion.

 

 

4 rounds Featherweights

 

Gary Salazar of Fresno, California defeats Jair Quintero by unanimous decision. The judges cards were 39-36 and 40-36 x 2 earning the win for Salazar. With the win Salazar improves to 3-0.

 

6 rounds Light Heavyweights

In the final fight of the night, 2012 Olympic Gold medalist Egor Mekhontsev defeated Dwayne Williams . The Russian born Mekhontsev showed poise and good power and he stalked Williams early. A solid mix of body shots and straight lefts from the southpaw proved too much for Williams who had no answers.
