Danger Zone: Maidana shocks the world. And The New!
In the main event billed as “Danger Zone” proved nothing short of just that for for the undefeated Adrien Broner who lost his WBA welterweight crown to Marcos Maidana. The crowd inside the Alamodone in San Antonio, Texas was on their feet before, during and when the fight was over as Jimmy Lennon Jr. announced “And the new”. Maidana “El Chino” Maidana performed a well executed plan and won on all three judges score cards 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109. Andrian Broner falls to (27-1, 22KOs). Shortly after the fight Broner was taken to the hospital in an ambulance for a check up. The hard hitting Marcos Maidana improves his record to (35-3, 33KOs).
The fight breakdown: Maidana started the fight early looking to impose his will and aggressiveness. He seemed to have a very well thought out plan applying constant pressure and keep Broner out of rhythm. In the second round Broner took a well placed left hook that sent him to the canvas for the first time in his career. The knockdown look to be the work of the good body work in round one, Maidana had feinted the hook to the body and came upstairs and landed flush. Although Broner was able to get back up he seemed very hurt and made it out of the round.
Round three was a pivotal round for Broner, he seemed to have regained balance and was able to make a full recovery from the second round knockdown. Broner landed some good counter shots on the challenger, this went on through the middle rounds and although Maidana was still applying relentless pressure it seemed that Broner was more effective. Going into round seven Broner was able to get a small rhythm going and Maidana looked a little fatigued by the end of the round.
Round eight was the to me the final turning point in the fight, both fighters were landing some good shots. Maidana put together a nice3 punch combination that hurt Broner badly and sent him to the canvas for the second time in the fight. Broner got up, seemed a little upset but also very hurt. Broner was in survival mode, while in a clinch Maidana through a headbutt out of frustration while trying to free himself from the clinch. Broner immediately through himself to the ground, the ref took a point deduction which brought on a lull to the action. Once the action was called back on, Maidana took complete control and never looked back taking control of rounds nine through eleven. The twelfth and final round was non stop action from both fighters, Broner was landing some hard shots to end the round.
