LONDON – Charlie Edwards is set to face Scotland’s Reece McFadden on Sunday evening, following the Scot’s shock defeat of the 52kg division’s favourite Andrew Selby of Wales in the first round of competition at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Friday night.
McFadden, who started hard and fast to win the first round by a point on all judges score cards, dug deep throughout the bout. After Selby won the second round everything came down to the final stanza, which was a cracker.
However Selby unwittingly threw away any chances of securing the final round, as well as the chance to face old foe Charlie Edwards in the next round of competition, after being deducted two points due to an errant gumshield falling out on numerous occasions.
“Following learning that it is McFadden, rather than the expected Selby, that he will face in the next round of competition, Charlie said.
“No disrespect to Reece, I really was expecting it to be Andrew I’d be fighting, in a way it should have been, Reece didn’t beat Andrew, Andrew threw it away”.
“I was really looking forward to fighting Andrew again, I knew I’d win that, I was totally ready for him”.
“Mind you we were preparing in our mind for Reece as well, we had thought that he may get a bit of help from the judges, being the home fighter”.
“I’m taking this fight seriously, I’m not taking this fight lightly at all, or Reece, this is the biggest fight of life and I’m going to take this opportunity with both hands. I’m a hundred percent ready for this”.
Charlie Edwards versus Reece McFadden, in the final sixteen of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games will take place on Sunday 27th July at approximately 6:30 p.m. and will broadcast live on the BBC.
