Champ Champ Media Day: Daniel Cormier at the UFC PI
Just two weeks out from his biggest fight yet, UFC lightweight and heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier (22-2) talked to media for a hot minute then slid over to the Octagon to showcase his cage skills for a pair of rounds all at the UFC’s beautiful Performance Institute. The Louisiana native ran late thanks to shaping our country’s youth via a couple of wrestling tournaments that Las Vegas morning but, was on time to give us the scoop on his first heavyweight title defense and immediate as well as distant future.
Here are the highlights from the man that they call “DC” recently re-minted as “Double Champ” and the AKA team captain out of San Jose:
On the melee that sprouted from the aftermath of the Khabib vs. McGregor title bout last month at T-Mobile Arena … “The guy that hit him (Conor) from behind was the worst action…it was no black eye for the sport. We fight. Thats what we do”
On McGregor vs. Khabib rematch.. “I dont know what else he (McGregor) could learn to change the outcome”
What it means to fight at Madison Square Garden… “This place has hosted some of the biggest fights in #history. Could you imagine your face on the side of the Garden? . ..oh sh*t. I could”
Breaking down his next opponent and the myth that is Derrick Lewis’ popularity versus his actual skills, ability and agility… “To watch Derrick do what hes done. To some people it might be surprising, Lewis. No. .. I respect what he’s done to accomplish where he’s at today”
Cormier on retirement… “I know the day is coming…you see some of the greatest fighters ever go for that win…you have to know when its over”
And finally how truly interested the WWE is in his ability to join their team … “If I didn’t have this fight..the WWE wanted me to have a try out as part of the commentary team…I never not want to be in the UFC …this (UFC) is home. I love being home”
