Canelo beats Trout and passes biggest test

saul alvarez gana-caneloSan Antonio, TX – 39,247 fans packed the Alamodome and BoxeoMundial was on hand to see the undefeated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez take on the dangerous undefeated WBA super welterweight champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout in a unification bout. The bout had major implications as the WBC title held by Alvarez was also at stake.

Although undefeated at (42-0-1), many ringside experts viewed this as a dangerous fight for the young Alvarez (21 years old) as this was a major step up in class and with Trout coming off a virtuoso performance just one fight prior practically dominating Miguel Cotto over 12 rds. It was almost a certainty that Alvarez was in for a long night.

What some fans didn’t know is that this fight was more than just a unification fight, it was a fight for pride, a fight for family and it was personal as Trout had traveled to the older brothers hometown of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and captured the vacant WBA title some 26 months prior winning a UD decision over 12 Rds.

Alvarez fought a brilliant fight; Trout was hurt several times throughout the fight. In the seventh round Alvarez caught Trout flush with a powerful shot that sent Trout to the canvas for the first time in his career and sent the packed house of 39,247 to their feet chanting for Alvarez to finish the fight.

All three judges had the bout scored in favor of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, after the 116-111, 115-112 and 118-109. After the bout, the younger Alvarez handed the WBA belt to his Brother stating that the bout was won in his honor. “My brother was my motivation for this fight, I did this for him. He beat my brother and that is my blood” stated the undefeated champion (Alvarez). Alvarez improves his undefeated record to an impressive (42-0-1), could a fight with the pound for pound best fighter in the world be on the horizon (Floyd Mayweather Jr.).
