BOXEO TELEMUNDO FORD:Daniel “El Alacrán” Lozano and Antonio Tostado vie for the WBO Interim Super Flyweight title
Miami – July 30, 2014 – “Boxeo Telemundo Ford” continues its 2014 summer season this Friday live from the A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa, Florida as native son Daniel “El Alacrán” Lozano faces off against Mexico’s Antonio Tostado García for the World Boxing Organization’s Interim Super Flyweight title. René Giraldo and Jessi Losada will provide commentary and analysis of this eagerly awaited 10-round match up.
Boxing fans can follow every second of the action in detail on the Deportes Telemundo Twitter account, @TelemundoSports.
Lozano (11-1, 8 KO) steps into the ring for the first time in 2014. He will do so with the overwhelming support of the fans in attendance since he resides in the nearby town of Bowling Green. He fought California’s Matt Villanueva at the same venue last year in an intense all-out combat on “Boxeo Telemundo Ford.” Lozano had much success in 2011 and 2012 as he defeated Manuel Galaviz, Felipe Castañeda, Oscar “Chombo” Fuentes, and Jonathan Arias. Of his 8 knockouts, 7 were in the first three rounds.
Tostado (13-2, 6 KO) has had two fights in 2014, the first taking place in March on Boxeo Telemundo Ford when he claimed the WBO Latin Bantamweight title with a strong performance against Puerto Rico’s Jonathan “Pitbull” Vidal. This gave the Jamay, Jalisco native a shot at the WBO Super Flyweight Title versus Argentina’s Omar Narváez. After falling shot in his attempt at becoming a world champion, Tostado is determined to prove he deserves another chance to perform on the big stage. He fought six times in 2013, defeating the likes of Aarón Olivares, Carlos “La Víbora” García, Juan Daniel “El Terrible” Acosta and Antonio Pérez.
On the same card, Guillermo “Borrego” Ávila (14-2, 11 KO) looks for an upset win against Russia’s Andrey Klimov (17-1, 8 KO) in a 10 round bout for Klimov’s WBO Intercontinental Super Featherweight title. Ávila, who like Tostado hails from Jamay, Jalisco, has put together a solid résumé in his young pro career, suffering only two losses. The first was a controversial decision defeat against former world champion Wilfredo Vázquez Jr. and the second a hard fought war against Jonathan Oquendo. Now, after five months of intense training, Ávila is out to achieve the most important victory of his career.
Klimov, who comes to Tampa by way of Klimovsk, Russia, has beaten some solid competition to get to this stage of his career, including Matías Ezequiel Gómez and John Molina. His last win was against the always tough Francisco Contreras, a bout that earned him the WBO Intercontinental Super Featherweight title. The only blemish of his career was a decision loss against the WBO World Lightweight champ, Terence Crawford, who is considered one of top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport.
“Boxeo Telemundo Ford” continues to make history, reaching 640,000 viewers with its July 18 broadcast of the match between Jonathan “Pitbull” Vidal and Juan “Loquito” Kantún. It was the most viewed boxing program the week of July 14, and is the first show of its type to broadcast uninterrupted for 25 years on US Spanish-language television. This summer “Boxeo Telemundo Ford” has brought viewers a stellar lineup of matches, and closes out the season with Mexico’s Édgar “Nene” Ortega taking on Puerto Rico’s Daniel Rosario in the 10 round main event for the WBO Latino Welterweight title on Friday August 8th at 11:35PM/10:35C, live from Salón José Cuervo in Mexico City.
