General Information:
Born in the small rural village of La Plaine, Haiti. He is youngest of 14 children having five brothers and eight sisters. When he was 10 his mother moved the family Miami and eventually to Canada.
He won his first 12 pro fights by KO/TKO, 9 in the first round. In July 2007 he suffered an upset stoppage against journeyman Demetrice King who had an 11-15 record. After 5 more wins he was held to a draw by in April 2009 by Charles Davis who had a 17-17 record and had lost nine fights in a row when he fought Stiverne.
In January 2011 Stiverne halted Kertson Manswell (20-0) in two rounds and in June floored and halted Ray Austin in ten rounds in a WBC eliminator. In April 2013 he floored Chris Arreola in the first round, broke his nose and went on to win the unanimous decision on scores of 117-110 twice and 118-109.
That was his last fight as the WBC did not pressure Vitali Klitschko into making his mandatory defence. He now gets his chance but only after Klitschko vacated the title. He is the first fighter of Haitian decent to fight for the heavyweight title.
** Some biographies on Stiverne claim he was Canadian national champion in 2001/2/3 and 2004 but he was not. It is also claimed in Wikipedia that he won a bronze medal at the 2003 Canadian championships but the bronze medal winners in 2003 were Matt Mychajliv and Adnan Shahkaran.
