Bellator 106 results: Eddie Alvarez regains title after five round war with Micheal Chandler
It is not often a rematch lives up to its billing. But after 25 grueling minutes of action in the Bellator 106 headlining title bout between Bellator’s Lightweight champion Michael Chandler and former lightweight title holder Eddie Alvarez, it not only lived up but might have surpassed their epic battle from 2011. The end of an amazing night of fights on November 2, 2013 all came down to the last three judges judges at the Convention and Entertainment Center in Long Beach, California that surely would be controversy no matter the outcome.
The result: a divided judging panel and possibly a divided MMA community as well. Eddie Alverez took back the title in a hard fought 5 round split decision (48-47, 47-48, 48-47). With that he takes back the title he lost almost 1 year ago. Alvarez is the champion once again! That is what Eddy wanted since losing the title in dramatic fashion on November 19, 2012. With those result a very divided but satisfied crowd left the Arena.
One thing we all learned after 1 year between bouts is that these two MMA warriors are made for each other and will bring their division and Bellator MMA to new heights. From a business stand it is a win-win for everyone involved. Chandler might have lost controversially but his stock is seriously up. Alavarez might have been an unhappy man recently but this gives him new challenges. This also guarantees a trilogy in the making.
Even though most of the main card fights went to decision results, the fights itself did not disappoint. Besides Eddie Alvarez capturing the Bellator Lightweight title there are also two new title holders in the organization in the Featherweight and Light Heavyweight division after Bellator 106.
Emanuel Newton won the interim Light Heavyweight title by beating Muhammed Lawal via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46).
Daniel Straus captured the Featherweight title by defeating the title holder Pat Curran by unanimous decision (49-45, 48-46, 48-46).
The rest of the main card saw Joe Riggs defeating Mike Bronzulis by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) to win the Fight Master Series. The reality TV series tournament that started with 32 welterweight fighters ended with Riggs taking home the $100,000 earnings.
Last but certainly not least the opening bout delivered the only stoppage of the main card with Mike Richman defeating Akop Stepanyan by TKO in the featherweight division.
