Video: DANIEL JACOBS: I AM WILLING TO FACE EVERYBODY OUT THERE
By Cashmere Robinson
On Saturday night at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn-raised Daniel Jacobs and Michigan-raised but Brooklyn resident Peter Quillin engaged in the “Battle for Brooklyn” on Showtime. This was for the WBA “regular” middleweight title, which is the secondary belt to Gennady Golovkin’s “super” title — boxing’s alphabet soup is bad — but Showtime pretended this fight was for the meaningful championship.
The unbeaten Quillin entered the contest as a slight favorite against the heavy-handed Jacobs, but Jacobs seized the opportunity early and hurt Quillin with a hard right hand. Jacobs immediately pounced on Quillin and went in for the finish. Quillin was getting tagged repeatedly but kept firing back. Another right hand turned Quillin’s legs to jelly as he stumbled all over the ring without going down. Harvey Dock made the call to prevent Quillin from continuing just seconds later, much to the dismay of the crowd.
