Top prospect Tommy Langford aims to announce his arrival in the talent-packed middleweight division when he challenges for his first professional title on Saturday 4th July at the National Stadium in Dublin.
The unbeaten talent from Bideford, North Devon, but now based out of Birmingham, will face hard German Ronny Mittag for the Vacant WBO Intercontinental title and looks to mark his arrival alongside domestic rivals Billy Joe Saunders, Chris Eubank Jnr., and Andy Lee.
Langford will feature as chief-support to Irish hero Jamie Conlan, who makes the first defence of his WBO Intercontinental Super-Flyweight title, on the card that includes rising Irish stars Ryan Burnett, Patrick Hyland and Declan Garaghty, live and exclusive on BoxNation.
Undefeated Langford signed with promoter Frank Warren last year and has looked sensational in his four fights to date halting three of them. Last time out in February he destroyed Wayne Reed inside five rounds in his best performance to date to secure his first title shot.
Mittag is a big step up for Langford, the Brandenburg warrior has only lost once on points in 25 fights, including one draw, and has held the IBO International title and IBF East/West Europe title.
“I wanted a test for my first championship title fight and I’ve got one,” Said Langford.
“Mittag’s got a very good record and from what I’ve seen of him he looks like a good stand up boxer which will provide me with a good test of my abilities and what I need to work on at this level,”
“I’m not taking anything for granted, but I’ve got belief in my skills and ability and am confident of winning this fight.”
“I’ve been with Frank a year and everything is going to plan. I’m very excited to fight for my first title which has come at the right time in my career. I want to starting mixing with the best in the division get through this fight and this will give me a world ranking.”
Through Dublin born trainer Tom Chaney, Langford believes he’ll have a strong following at the National Stadium and with his Birmingham fans also in attendance
“I can’t wait to go to Dublin and fight there for the first time,” added Langford.
“My trainer Tom is from Dublin and he’s got a lot of connections there so I’ll have support with me on the night through him and I’ll also have a load of fans coming over from Birmingham, so I’ll have a good crowd there,”
“I need to deal with Mittag first and do a good job on him and then my name will be more in the mix with the other top middleweights. The division is red hot at the moment, Saunders, Eubank and Lee are well in front, but Lee Blackwell is an interesting fight and I’d like to fight him this year.”
