World Class Trainer Abel Sanchez feels Sullivan Barrera is a fight away from title shot

sullivan barrera-el nuevo heraldWorld class trainer Abel Sanchez feels that undefeated light heavyweight Sullivan Barrera (15-0) has the potential to develop into a great fighter and become a champion for a long time.  The highly decorated amateur trains in the high altitude of Big Bear, Calif. under the tutelage of Sanchez who also trains Gennady Golovkin and many other fighters.

“I see great potential in him, mainly from the great knowledge that he brings with him from Cuba,” said Sanchez who is working on making his style more fan friendly. “It’s just now transforming him to more of an international, more of an American style that is going to be fan attractive.  He has tremendous ability and tremendous upside.  Again it’s just making the transition that is the challenge for us.”
Sanchez, who also trained former four-time champion Terry Norris, feels that even though Golovkin has a lot more power than Barrera (or any other fighter for that matter), they still have many common traits.

“They both have a lot of knowledge and they both have dealt with a lot of different styles.  Obviously Golovkin is a bigger puncher than Sullivan is even at that weight, but Sullivan has other attributes that will help him.  Golovkin has some attributes that he hasn’t had to resort to that Sullivan may have to use and I believe he has the ability to do it,” said Sanchez.
Sanchez is on board with the rest of Barrera’s team who feel the 33-year-old is just a fight a way from a title shot. Barrera’s promoter Main Events has been pushing to get him a big fight and Sanchez feels that he is on the cusp of greatness.
“I’ve always said that I need three to four fights with any of the guys I work with to convert them to the way that I want them to fight. This is probably the third full training camp with him so that is exactly what we think, take on a top 10 guy and then get a title shot,” Sanchez stated.
Barrera is on track to return in May or June and hopes that his promoter secures a big name opponent.  Barrera last fought in January when he demolished former champion Jeff Lacy in rounds and returned to his training camp in February.
