BEY SURVIVES LATE KNOCK DOWN TO PICK UP UNANIMOUS NOD OVER HERRERA
In the co-main event of the night Las Vegas’ own Mickey Bey put on a solid boxing showcase for the local crowd who came to see their man continue climbing back to the top of the lightweight division. This time, opposite a game Alan Herrera, the Vegas fighter used his great conditioning to stick and move along the ring as Herrera endlessly chased an extremely slick target. When he wasn’t gliding along the ring, Bey landed shots on his man with a stiff jab and even stiffer over hand right or left hook.
The only bump in the road to an otherwise picture perfect performance saw Bey back out of an exchange with his hands down while Herrera landed a solid left hand counter that sent him to the canvas in the 7th round. Bey recovered well and continued the quality performance that had him alert at all turns and using his feet to set up clean punches that gathered much praise from the hometown crowd.
The judges saw it 97-92 and 98-92 twice for Mickey Bey who admitted that he was caught off balance and “with a good shot” during the 7th round scare but moves closer to another title shot later next year.
CUELLAR RETAINS WBA INTERIM BELT VIA UD
The opening match on the main card saw Argentina’s Jesus Cuellar (23-1) take on former title holder, Rico Ramos (23-3) in a 12 round affair for the WBA Interim Featherweight Title. Ramos opted to trade at close quarters with the heavier handed Argentine from that round on, never finding an answer for the constant pressure that Cuellar applied. There were a few spots were referee Kenny Bayless had to warn Cuellar for his over-aggression as he landed on the back of Ramos’ head from time to time following an exchange or the two tangled up.
Ramos was forced to use his legs more as the rounds progressed. Heading into the 6th round, he temporarily found an answer by planting his feet then being first with his right hand. The shot began landing with accuracy unto his southpaw opponent thus Ramos had found the weapon of choice to try to rally back midway into the bout. With about 2 minutes left in 8th round Cuellar landed a right hand to the back of his man’s head, Ramos took a knee from the impact and before the action continued referee Bayless took a point from Cuellar due to the foul. Both 125ers kept the action at a high pace going into the later rounds, trading leather back & forth. A clash of heads momentarily stopped the action in the 10th round but the gash on Ramos’ forehead only motivated him to keep pushing forward as they went to the final bell.
In the end Argentina’s Jesus Cuellar prompted a roar from the highly pro-Argentine crowd as he triumphed with a unanimous decision over Rico Ramos with scores of 116-112, 117-109 and 114-112.
