BARNES OUT TO WRECK GAVIN’S LONSDALE BELT DREAM
David Barnes has promised to destroy British Welterweight Champion Frankie Gavin’s dream of winning the Lonsdale belt outright when they clash at the Copper Box Arena onSaturday 21st September in their Battle of Britain.
Manchester southpaw Barnes, himself a former outright winner of the Lonsdale belt at welterweight and a British champion at light-welter, says he’s in the shape of his life for his showdown with the unbeaten Birmingham star and will wreck Gavin’s third and crucial title defence.
Hot talent Gavin outpointed the tricky Junior Witter last November to win the title and put on a powerful performance to stop Jason Welborn in the first defence in January. He showed his tremendous potential by stopping Manchester’s Commonwealth Champion Denton Vassell in June in the seventh round, but Barnes says he leagues above anything Gavin has fought.
Gavin v Barnes features on a multi-title extravaganza promoted by Frank Warren on the grand opening of the Copper Box Arena alongside stars Billy Joe Saunders, Dereck Chisora, Paul Butler, Liam Walsh and Mitchell Smith all in title action, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).
Barnes, 32, said, “Gavin thinks I’m finished and he couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m still fresh, I look after myself and I’m really up for this fight against Gavin like no other. I’ll show you an upset, just you see.”
“I’ve heard it all before what Gavin is saying and all the people on Twitter and boxing web site forums. Ted Bami was expected to knock me out and look what I did to him,”
“I’ve got the experience on Gavin and I’m better than anything he’s faced so far. I’ve been there, seen it and done it, nothing will rattle me, words are just words and it’s what you do in the ring on the night that counts and I’ll become British welterweight champion again, watch me.”
“I’m in fantastic condition, on the night I’ll be at my peak and nothing will stop me, not even Gavin. He’s young and talented, but I’ve not seen anything to worry me at all.”
A packed Copper Box Arena multi-title show features Billy Joe Saunders v John Ryder for the British and Commonwealth Middleweight title; Dereck Chisora v Edmund Gerber for the Vacant European Heavyweight title; Frankie Gavin v David Barnes for the British and Commonwealth Welterweight Championship, Paul Butler v Miguel Gonzalez for the Vacant WBO Intercontinental Super-Flyweight Championship; Liam Walsh v Joe Murray for the Commonwealth and Vacant IBF International Super-Featherweight title; Mitchell Smith v Scott Moises for the Vacant Southern Area Super-Featherweight title.
