UFC 202: Fight Pass Prelims Results Recap
(Welterweight Bout – 3 Rounds)
Both men were tentative as they circled each other in the middle of the cage before Larkin walked his foe down and whipped a hard front leg kick to his man’s body that had Magny fly backwards into the cage wall. Larkin closed the distance using the clinch and landed a short punch then an uppercut that just missed it’s mark. Magny circled out but Larkin took it to him again with a wicked front right kick to the body that made him fall backwards unto his seat before popping back up. ‘The Monsoon’ Larkin walked him down over and over along the cage wall and Magy’s movement was very limited since he was hobbling when he walked. The Californian had caught his man with a hard low leg kick that caught the inside of Magny’s leg hurting him badly. That Larkin kick had completely disabled Magny’s left leg and he was clearly not able to walk or put any pressure on it. Larkin came at him again using some punches and kicks and Magny desperately tried to shoot in for a take down then pulled guard when it was stuffed. Larkin walked away knowing that he had full control on the feet via his deadly strikes, he created enough space to make the referee stand Magny up. But, instantly he marched his foe down and Magny tried shooting in for a single leg but had no luck as Larkin stepped out of it then adjusted the angle before busting his man up with some serious hammer fists and elbows. The downed Magny covered up and turned his body on the mat prompting the referee to step in and call a stop to the bout.
RESULT: Lorenz Larkin stops Neil Magny via 1st Round TKO at (4:08) via strikes.
Max ‘Pain’ Griffin (12-3) vs. Colby Covington (10-1)
(Welterweight Bout – 3 Rounds)
Both men swapped punches and low leg kicks in order to feel each other out for the first minute of the bout. Covington managed to get the match to the floor off of a single leg takedown after a quick boxing exchange and worked to get top control. Griffin scrambled but Covington stayed on him like glue as he pressed him along the cage wall. Griffin attacked him in the form of a kimura when his man was trying to go for mount and it was in deep however, Covington hit a summersault and as he rolled he escaped the submission and found himself in his foe’s guard. The Californian adjusted to half guard as Covington worked his ground and pound during the final minute of the stanza able to temporarily get full mount during the last 10 seconds but the round came to an end.
Going into Round 2 the Florida resident landed 2 big left hands before dropping levels and hitting another take down on Griffin 30 seconds into the round. He dragged his foe on the floor via body lock then got into Griffin’s half guard before punching at him with some left hooks to the head and body. ‘Pain’ had nowhere to go since he was being controlled and pressed along the cage wall by his foe with relative ease for the first few minutes. Covington pulled him back off of a body lock around his man’s waist, then scrambled to full mount with a little over 2 minutes left in Round 2. Griffin escaped by turning and giving up his back but Covington stayed on top of him and kept landing some clean left hooks , this time mainly to his opponent’s head. He kept riding him along the cage wall using a body lock to keep Griffin in check and when an opening presented itself Covington raked him across the face with that left hand shot. The Californian managed to pop up to his feet just before the bell rung but clearly he was down 2 rounds.
Heading into Round 3 Griffin made the mistake of throwing a low leg kick early which Covington perfectly timed and caught then hit a single leg and again brought the match to the floor. From there it was all nothing but control for ‘Chaos’ Covington; he took his man’s back and kept control off of the body lock and rode him before whipping at him with crisp left hands. This time the blows were making Griffin’s head snap back with little to no return fire. About 15 of them went unanswered as the referee looked over giving Griffin a final chance to respond, he retaliated with a couple of back elbows but not enough to change the tide making the official step in to prevent any further punishment.
RESULT: Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington stops Max Griffin via 3rd Round TKO at (2:18) via strikes.
Alberto Uda (9-2) vs. Marvin Vettori (11-2)
(Middleweight Bout – 3 Rounds)
After a few exchanges in the middle of the Octagon, Italy’s Vettor closed the distance on Uda and dragged him to the ground off of a powerful head lock. He immediately pulled guard as he did it and turned his man in order to go for top position. He worked from the top and was more than happy to start putting together his ground and pound for the next few minutes. Brazil’s Uda weathered the storm but was on the defensive for the roughly 3 minutes twisting and turning, looking to buck his hips to escape or tie his man up chest to chest in order to slow down the assault. He managed top prop back and scoot his hips towards the cage wall creating some distance but Vettori was more than happy to block his foe’s up kicks and land some standing to ground strikes. He avoided the attack, pushed Uda’s legs out of the way then pressed him along the cage wall riding his back. The Trentino native transitioned to a solid head and arm guillotine choke that was in tight giving Uda no choice but to tap.
RESULT: Marvin Vettori submits Alberto Uda via head and arm guillotine at (4:30) of Round 1.
