Shane Mosley did the right thing in throwing in the towel for against Diego De La Hoy
A couple hours before the Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan pay-per-view bout kicked off, boxing legend Shane Mosley showed that he can make the good calls when his fighter, Rocco Santamauro, froze in his match against Diego De La Hoya. Mosley’s fighter was shredded at the weigh in and was in better shape than Diego De La Hoya, cousin of Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya. That didn’t matter when Santamauro, on the biggest stage of his career and after all the training Mosley gave him went out the window after being knocked down.
A clearly frustrated Mosley, coaching from the sidelines in between rounds, was begging his fighter to do what he had been practicing. Santamauro looked strong the first few rounds until he got knocked down and then you could see that his emotions clouded all of the training he had received.
Mosley could be heard yelling, “stop lunging in. Stop lunging in. Do what I showed you,” but Rocco couldn’t. He was too clouded with emotion and in the 7th round Mosley did the right thing to protect his fighter and stopped the fight.
Twitter and other social media outlets went crazy with support for Mosley and his decision, hailing him as a great coach. Santamauro definitely has a has a good trainer who looks after his fighter and the Southern California based boxer has a ton of heart. I am sure we have not seen the last of Rocco Santomauro.
